Help: Calorie Counting.

Dear all ,

Something has changed in the last few weeks and i am not sure what.  basically the calorie count on my edge 1040 activities is not transferring to the "main system / connect "   So yesterday, while my ride use around 4000 (yes I rode 200km/125 miles) but my total count for the day was 3000.    What I think is happening is the "system/ connect" is using the calories count base off my heart rate / fenix7 watch which is not recording an activity and not the activity which is recorded by the edge.   The Edge number corresponds with my manual powermeter/time calculation, at this level of endurance heart rate alone is not accurate.

The thing is these numbers are important to me, to help ensure my calorie consumption is near to my needs and i done build deficit that could start to degrade muscle.  (I am also sure people dieting would be frustrated.)

Any thoughts on what to check greatly appreciated

 J

  • What is going on here Garmin? This is so frustrating and really not acceptable now. Its about three months ago the first report of this? Can you give any update soon or should we all just return out new Edge devices back and money return? They are no use when we need to double record with wrist based watch no get it right...

  • Totally agree. It’s been almost 3 months and the issue still in place. That’s unbelievable. Several updates were roll out and still doesn’t work. I’m thinking about to swap Epix to Apple Watch ultra and keep only Edge head unit. That’s became useless to have both devices

  • Exactly same type of issues with Edge 840, Venu 2S, HRM Pro plus and power meter rides. Seems that after venu 2S gets synced when I get back home, calories are all over the place (sth like 1200 active calories from the ride but in garmin connect it shows about 180 active calories). Tried turning physio true up on / off, removed all devices from account etc. Nothing seems to help. Also if HRM PRO Plus is connected to phone, it seems that it also overrides somehow edge activity calories in connect summary (insight from previous time when calorie counting was somewhat working)

  • Just to keep this thread alive. The issue has not been resolved yet. I have a private conversation with Garmin where I regularly ask for status updates on the matter but they are unwilling to communicate any timelines and just say that the issue has been escalated to engineering. I have also provided Garmin with all of my activities raw data. It really feels like this is going nowhere and users are left to live with it.

  • This doesn’t sound good. I believe it’s time to wait for the new Apple Watch update or whoop and switch the watches, keep only EDGE head unit. It’s sad that I cannot use on 100% such expensive devices together. Actually, I get used to not to wear watch while riding and it seems ok, don’t feel a strong need in Epix now

  • I think that this issue should be publicised to a wider audience (i.e. via youtube reviews or blog posts) so that more and more people know what they get into when spending this kind of money on Garmin fitness tracking devices. It's the only way I can see working at drawing Garmin's attention and interest in addressing the problem.

I work in software development and sadly this is how the business works. Things get "forgotten" as low priority.

  • New Firmware update today on all new Edge devices, could this be fixed?

  • Somebody tried yet after last update?

  • Not yet. I'll update the device as soon as I can and report here if it the issue disappears. However, I frankly doubt this is an issue with the EDGE firmware. Finally, there is no mention of this issue in the release notes for this version (18.23): forums.garmin.com/.../new-edge-1040-series-version-18-23-now-available

  • From Garmin:

I am sorry the issue has not been resolved yet. Our Fitness segment is also involved in resolving the issue. The issue is impacting multiple devices across both fitness and outdoor devices so there are multiple engineering teams working on the solution.

For lack of any additional information, I will add that the overall Physio TrueUp feature is highly complicated when it needs to go between Fitness and Outdoor devices. The recent changes engineering made in Quarter 1 2023 was intended to resolve Physio TrueUp between our newer Edge and outdoor watches. The past Edge devices were not compatible with the newer version of the overall software that makes it work with our newer generation outdoor watches. Traditionally, the overall feature itself has always meant to be unique to only the same family of products. IE: You wear two watches in one-day or use two Edge devices of the same generation of software etc.
