Help: Calorie Counting.

Dear all ,

Something has changed in the last few weeks and i am not sure what.  basically the calorie count on my edge 1040 activities is not transferring to the "main system / connect "   So yesterday, while my ride use around 4000 (yes I rode 200km/125 miles) but my total count for the day was 3000.    What I think is happening is the "system/ connect" is using the calories count base off my heart rate / fenix7 watch which is not recording an activity and not the activity which is recorded by the edge.   The Edge number corresponds with my manual powermeter/time calculation, at this level of endurance heart rate alone is not accurate.

The thing is these numbers are important to me, to help ensure my calorie consumption is near to my needs and i done build deficit that could start to degrade muscle.  (I am also sure people dieting would be frustrated.)

Any thoughts on what to check greatly appreciated

  • Welcome to the club.

Hi there. I’m facing the same issue mentioned above.

I have Garmin Epix Gen2 and Garmin edge 1040 (v16.13). Calories from completed activity on 1040 + HRM strap do not count in ‘total calories’ in the Connect app while wearing Epix on the hand.

upd. See screenshots attached. I did two activities today: (1) gym (recorded from the watch) and (2) road cycling (recorded from 1040 + HRM strap). Calories from 1040 are missing

  • That is curious, as Garmin implied that my watch is old (Fenix 6) and that is the reason. For now I am not wearing my watch during ride and synch activity before I am connected by to watch and that gives better result, although I have around 200-300  extra calories, per 2 hour activity, probably because I am wearing HRM pro strap.

  • Forgot to mention. I also wear an HRM strap with Edge 1040 during a road cycling.

    What I found:

    - if I wear an Epix on the wrist during a cycling activity, then calories from edge 1040 + HRM strap do not count in connect app. I don’t start an activity or track HR from the watch, I just wear it.

    - if I don’t wear an Epix, then calories are counted in ‘total calories’ in Connect app.

it seems, that Connect app thinks that Epix is a primary device and tries to record data from it. It is obviously a bug and should be fixed by Garmin.

I used to have Edge 530 with the same set-up (Epix and hrm pro strap). Never faced such issue.

  • Same issue here. I use an EDGE 1040 to record my cycling activities and an Instinct 2 Solar as fitness tracker. The EDGE is set to be the primary device. Daily calories are completely off and this is rather frustrating. Find screenshots attached and feel free to contact me directly and/or look into my account data.

  • if you go to the activity summary then click the 2nd to the left tab (the one that looks like a paper with a list) it should have a more detailed calorie breakdown. What does it show for resting, active, and total for that activity compared to the daily summary?

  • Same here with newest Edge 840 and Fenix 7x. Not possible to use My Fitness Pal by the moment. Please fix this Garmin, it’s reported all over the web now in many forums….

  • You got this solved from garmin? Very annoying and i have the sam problem as you... I train a lot so i need to eat enough!!!!!... Was not like this last year with my Edge 830 so something has happened lately..

  • Nope. This is going on for a while and there seems to be no progress. If I was to make a guess, I'd say this is a bug in the backend occurring when syncing data and reconciling multiple sources (they called that physio true up or something similar)

Finally, I gotta say, whilst Garmin does produce good quality hardware, I have never been impressed by the quality of the software they develop, both on device firmware and cloud apps.
