ZWIFT Rides No Longer Count Towards Challenges?

I was half way to completing the 2021 "January Ride to 200" challenge with ZWIFT rides and now my progress says zero.
My ZWIFT rides have always counted in the past challenges... is this something new??

  • e7andy,  With a smart trainer, the elevation ZWIFT provides is relevant.  In my opinion  ZWIFT does a pretty good job of calculating distance, speed, and elevation.  I find that my ZWIFT ride data correlates quite well with my outdoor rides.

  • MJWills,  If that is the reason, it's just silly.  I can sit on my ass and start/stop my Garmin - then edit the miles (for only that activity) to earn a badge with one activity, zero effort.  If Garmin wants to stop cheating... they should probably close that loophole first.  Based on the response from the user community, this change has mostly only had the effect of pissing off legitimate, non-cheating, users.

  • Easy Workaround I came up with although Garmin should change their stance.  www.youtube.com/watch

Got reply now from garmin via email ,

I looked into why that happened for you Dimitris and it appears that Zwift activities were counting towards challenges when they should not have been. It was fixed with a recent update. Badge challenge activities must be performed on a Garmin device and uploaded directly to Garmin Connect or the Garmin Connect app for it to count. I will add you to a feature request ticket we have open for Zwift rides in Connect to count towards challenges/badges.

  • Zwift activities not counting towards badges.  Hard to ride outside with 3” of snow on the ground, come on Garmin!

  • I had a support chat concerning that issue a few seconds before. Garmin says "an activity has to be recorded on a Garmin device". I told them, that I use Garmin devices for several thousand Euros including a Texc Neo. From my point of view it's my descision what device I use for recording an activity. As long they treat Garmin Connect as a central piece of software where all activities are stored, they have to treat all activities the same amd count them for challenges.

They told me that there's an open support ticket concerning Zwift and they would add me. Let's see what happens.

Meanwhile I'm using a web application to modify the Zwift files that it seems they've been recorded by a Garmin Edge. If I upload them to GC, this activities will be counted for the callenges. As others mentioned I could pair my Tacx Neo with my Fenix and record the activity - but elevation will be missing and the distance is different to the one in Zwift. So I think it's abetter way to disable the Zwift -> Garmin conection, download the Zwift file after the ride, use fitfiletools to modify the recording device to a Garmin one and upload the new file to Garmin. That work's fine...

What Garmin is doning here is a) discriminatory and b) completely silly 'cause every experienced user knows how to modify fit files.

  • If TACX (i.e. Garmin) actually had a reasonable alternative to Zwift, I'd be happy to support them and all my rides and ride data would work happily in Connect.  BUT, they don't.  The TACX virtual cycling app (imho) comes nowhere near what Zwift  provides.  As other posters have noted, we have spent a LOT of $$$ in Garmin hardware.  Is that support not enough?

I stuck with Garmin through the Ransomware debacle.  This is not a big ask for them to support their community.  Look at how big this thread has gotten...

  • So true.  I just learned of the work around reviewing the post.  I’ll be converting today

  • This is annoying and not in the spirit of the challenge.  I tried recording my Zwift using my Garmin device but the distance and power discrepancy between what I did and what was recorded meant I could not use the Garmin activity.  I did a 103km ride which the Garmin recorded as 83km of activity.  I now use the Garmin to only record minus having my smart trainer connected so I can get performance data which Garmin will not apply to the Zwift submitted activity (Aerobic/anerobic performance).  If I ride 100km on a smart trainer or a bike I have ridden 100km.
