Assigning default gear for individual activities

I just bought a pair of trail running shoes in addition to my road running shoes. I'd like to set up Garmin Connect such that when I choose 'run' on my Fenix 3, my road running shoes are linked and when I choose 'trail run' it knows that I'll be using the trail running shoes.

Currently I can only select 'other' when I choose an activity assigned to my trail running shoes, 'trail running' is not listed as an option under gear settings.

I have the same problem with my road and mountain bike.
  • ~6 Garmin watches

What are ~6 Garmin watches exactly? 5.5?

    Back to the issue:
It seems to that Garmin messed up the software. Because this feature is requested since decades. I have the same issue for Biking. But is it not only the default gear. If I choose cross country skiing it is always classic pre-selected and I have to change it manually.

I am only a spare time software engineer, but come on it cannot be that hard to offer this option in the Apps on the mobiles. This is why I think they messed it i the software architecture and the effort is to much for the software depatment.  From my first days using Garmin Hardware onwards, I am struggling with their software solutions. But as long as no Competitor reaches the same Hardware level, their is no need for Garmin to invest resources.

The hardware is always outstanding. This is why I like to use their PODs. But if you like to have user friendly software, Garmin is way off. But for personal reason I have to use a fenix watch.

I send this idea already to Official Garmin Website for customer ideas like 4 or 5 years ago. And for sure I was not the first. But I never got a response or something changed.

  • Same frustrations as everyone else.. I've submitted a request here as suggested by another user below: Share Ideas | Garmin

  • I have an indoor bike and trainer, would be awesome to be able to set different default gear for road cycling and indoor cycling!

  • Why not have Garmin Connect do it automatically, since there are specific cycling types already available and already get selected automatically when I upload the activity?

You have to ask that to Garmin. We, here on the user forum, cannot answer, and cannot do anything to change it (well, appart of coding a browser plugin that would do it).

It would almost be better to have no gear identified, rather than the wrong one defaulted and have to remember to change it.

You can do that certainly too - just remove the gear entirely, or disable the automated assignement.

  • I just submitted a request.

  • Please develop a way to assign various gear to specific activity types.  Road Bike for Road rides, Mtb for Mtb Rides, trail shoes for trail runs, etc.  Having to edit every time I do an activity shouldn't be necessary.

  • I agree with this request, many of us have different bikes for different types of activity. Many keen cyclists have three or more bikes. I have a road bike, two MTBs a tourer and a tandem. I use the gear facility to track their kms and having to edit activities to assign the gear that I used each time is a nuisance.

  • I've see a few post similar to my request but I want to make it simple and precise. While I will be talking about cycling, the idea can be cast to running and other activities.

I am a year round cyclist. During the spring, summer, fall and early winter, I mountain and road bike several times a week. During the winter, I largely snow bike (yes it's a real thing and should have it's own activity type.. ehem...). I don't do indoor trainers but the idea would apply to that as well.

Each cycling activity (Road, Mountain, Snow) requires a different bike. So when I record my cycling, I am constantly having to adjust what bike I used during the activity. While it's not too big of a deal to change in the app, it's still something that can be auto assigned by activity type. Especially when I let Garmin sync with Strava. Currently I have to change that gear selection in both apps to keep them consistent. Booo...

    So that said

I (we) need a way to assign default gear (in my case a bike) to an activity type. For example:

When I mountain bike, I'd like Garmin to use my default assigned mountain bike to that ride automatically. When I road bike, I'd like Garmin to use my default assigned road bike. When I snow bike (NEW ACTIVITY TYPE PLEASE cause snow biking IS NOT mountain biking) I'd like Garmin to use my default assigned fat bike.

This would be huge, much needed feature enhancement. I'm sure my runner friends and tri-athlete, trail running sister would also agree that they'd like to assign default shoes to different types of runs.

I've looked for the feature in Garmin Connect and the app, so if it does exist, it's pretty well hidden but I've love to start using it ASAP. Otherwise, please please please consider adding it to the Garmin activity tracking feature set.

    Thank you Garmin!

  • Agreed! I ride Road, MTB and Indoor on a smart trainer. I use a different bike and sensors i.e. power, cadence, speed for each activity. It is an inconvenience having to monitor what gear was used for each activity and in some ways makes the the gear tracking useless. I for one would love to use the gear tracking to  perform preventive maintenance based on distance before an actual breakdown occurs. I suppose I could go back and update all of my activities but it seems like a no brainer that gear should be linked to a specific activity profile and not an activity in general.
