Assigning default gear for individual activities

I just bought a pair of trail running shoes in addition to my road running shoes. I'd like to set up Garmin Connect such that when I choose 'run' on my Fenix 3, my road running shoes are linked and when I choose 'trail run' it knows that I'll be using the trail running shoes.

Currently I can only select 'other' when I choose an activity assigned to my trail running shoes, 'trail running' is not listed as an option under gear settings.

I have the same problem with my road and mountain bike.
  • Come on Garmin give us some more default choices.  I have shoes for road running and shoes for trail running.  I have a mountain bike for mountain biking, a road bike for road cycling and a gravel bike for gravel / unpaved cycling.  Seems like a simple data field addition that would be a huge improvement.

I recently got my Edge 1030 and I am pretty happy with it. Using it with multiple bikes I set up some activity profiles with different data screens and default ride types: MTB, "normal" cycling etc. one for each bike.

But when uploading the activity Connect ignores the default ride type even though Connect "knows" different types of cycling: BMX, Cyclocross, Downhill Biking etc.
Connect just categorizes the activity "Cycling" and assigns the default cycling gear/bike. Even though there is the option to configure multiple bikes within "gear" there is only one "default for cycling".

I would like to suggest, that
    1. Connect gets the "default ride type" from Edge properly and assigns it to the uploaded activity
    2. there is not only one "default for cycling" gear option, bunt one for each sub-type of cycling
  • still waiting for this update Disappointed

I find it hard to believe that something so simple to implement and so obviously useful to riders who, for example, want to set different default bikes for mountain biking vs. road biking, isn't implemented in all of Garmin's devices

  • isn't implemented in all of Garmin's devices

Gear is actually not handled by the device. It is a feature handled purely by the server, directly in the Garmin Connect account. If you want it implemented, make sure to ask Garmin. Here on the user forum, it is uncertain whether someone from Garmin spots the demand at all.

  • And how do you suggest we "ask Garmin..."?  Other than this forum, the Garmin Connect web page does not have any links to suggest features or report bugs. The help sections link you to a set of FAQ's and this forum....

Other companies build the ability to give feedback directly into their product, or use tools like User Voice to suggest and upvote ideas for product improvement.

I have also never seen a roadmap of improvements that have been planned, and those that have been delivered for Garmin Connect. FOr the idividual devices the change logs are much better documented.

    Use this form: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

  • Ive found this thread and have this same problem,

I do mountain bike riding and road riding and wish to automatically add that bike to each activity!

Let me know if there is any type of work around or update

I agree with this, I just discovered the "Road Cycling" setting.

You can set the gear manually. Most likely you consult the activity page anyway, when completed, and enter some notes, or other details, so adjusting the gear manually, when needed, is no big hassle.
