Assigning default gear for individual activities

I just bought a pair of trail running shoes in addition to my road running shoes. I'd like to set up Garmin Connect such that when I choose 'run' on my Fenix 3, my road running shoes are linked and when I choose 'trail run' it knows that I'll be using the trail running shoes.

Currently I can only select 'other' when I choose an activity assigned to my trail running shoes, 'trail running' is not listed as an option under gear settings.

I have the same problem with my road and mountain bike.
  • I use a 620, and run several types of shoes at the same time.

I haven't got my head round the GEAR function, how does it work with multiple shoes?

Although I have entered several shoe types in the gear box I can't allocate an individual shoe to that run. Am I missing something here?
  • If you hover over where it says "gear" in the run details that should open an "edit gear" box. You should then see the different shoes in your inventory. Hover over and select the shoe you use and itputs a tick next to it - job done.

I have two pairs of shoes set up on my profile and it works fine.
  • Tks KJUDE99
I sorta got it now. Shouldn't have had one of the boxes ticked for automatically allocating one of the sets of shoes. Fingers crossed. A lot can go wrong yet.
  • I have 4 pairs of shoes set up, though one I set a maximum of 10 miles (I've retired them before there was gear tracking, but will use them a bit to see what happens when shoes hit their max). None of them set as "automatic". I can't assign shoes from the activity widget, but if I go to a full page for activities, with "add Gear" I can pick the shoes, and the "gear" is updated for distance as expected. I think on the activity widget itself, you can see what gear you used, but can't assign gear.
  • I'd like to set up Garmin Connect such that when I choose 'run' on my Fenix 3, my road running shoes are linked and when I choose 'trail run' it knows that I'll be using the trail running shoes.
As you know, it doesn't work like that, because:
    • user specification of rules for automatically assigning default gear to activities upon upload allowed by Garmin Connect do not go down to that granularity; and
    • while I don't use a Fenix 3, I doubt you can create a custom activity profile that will record and upload a record of activity type (see Step 3) Trail Running (which is in the Type table, i.e. list of recognised types, for Activities in the Garmin Connect database) as opposed to Running, irrespective of what you name the custom activity profile. (The name may have meaning to you, but cannot be assumed to be recognised by either the system or anyone else as having logical meaning.)

Currently I can only select 'other' when I choose an activity assigned to my trail running shoes, 'trail running' is not listed as an option under gear settings.
Or you simply accept that for trail running activities you'll have to manually add/remove gear after upload, whereas for road running activities you don't (or vice versa, depending on which type of running you do more frequently, and set the default gear for running accordingly). Nobody said it would be fully automatic and do exactly what you want.

I have the same problem with my road and mountain bike.
    See this other discussion thread.
  • Is there a way to have Garmin Connect default the gear used based on the activity?  Here's my situation:

I ride both road and mountain bikes.  When I upload my activity to Garmin Connect, it will automatically indicate the activity type (at the top of the page) as either "Road cycling" or "Mountain biking."  This is great, but the bike that gets associated with the ride is ALWAYS my mountain bike.  So if I ride road, I have to remember to switch this.

I noticed on the Gear page, for my mountain bike, it says "Automatically add to..." and Cycling is selected:

But in the activity page, the drop-down lists multiple cycling types:

Can I get Garmin Connect to tag my mountain bike for "Mountain Biking" and my road bike for "Road Cycling"?  Seems like this should be possible if Garmin Connect automatically selects the cycling type specifically for the activity.

Coudl we have the ability to set defaults for gear so that we don't have to add it manually for every activity we do? I have one pair of running shoes but have to add them manually each time I run, it would be useful if they were automatically added to each logged run with the ability to remove them if they weren't used, or change them if I add a new pair of shoes. This is how it works in Strava, Nike RC etc.
  • That feature already exists.
Go to your Gear-page and edit a pair of shoes. You can then select to automaticly add them to new activities.
  • As far as I can tell this is a new request.

To start with - I admit there is a workaround for this, but I'm too lazy. Rather than do battle with the sub-menus on the Forerunner 410 watch - I record all activities (both runs and rides) in the default 'sport mode: 'run'

When I upload them to connect, they all receive the default gear assignment for 'run' (my current running shoes)

For rides, I change the activity type - but I have to also remember to remove my shoes and assign my bike.

Not a huge deal to workaround, but I can't imagine this would be a difficult fix either.

    Thanks,
  • Have you not got your bike set as default gear for a ride in garmin connect
