Active calories not calculating

I've had an issue with the active calories not calculating properly for the last 2 days. Yesterday, I ran (941 calories) and biked (230 calories). These calorie counts show up properly within the individual activity (both app and website), on the watch (920XT), and also on the calorie summary page (website). The total number of active calories burned on the calorie summary page (website and app) is showing as 552. At a minimum, it should be 1171 calories. I also took an additional 10,615 steps and it is showing no calories burned which is very unusual since there is normally a nominal number there. Today, I have the exact same issue. Biked (482 calories) and ran (403 calories) while total calorie burn is 648. No step calories for the additional 9,185 steps I have taken so far.

This is frustrating as I do use Connect with MyFitnessPal so while MFP has the correct activity calories, it is saying I am doing nothing the remainder of the day so no calories are being added onto that. The Garmin app is then WAY off since the active calories are even lower than what MFP is showing.

Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions? I have an e-mail into Garmin support as well. Thanks in advance for any help/insight!
  • I am sorry to bother here, but I would like to ask you, what if Total Active Calories does not correspond to the sum of Active Calories of multiple activities during the day(not even with the sum of Activity ones)

  • what if Total Active Calories does not correspond to the sum of Active Calories of multiple activities during the da

It should not. Total Daily Active Calories contain all Active Calories from the day, not only Active Calories of the Activities, but also Active Calories burned over the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) at any other physical or mental activity..

Besides that, Activity Calories include not only Active Calories, but also the passive part (RMR), hence you cannot sum Activity Calories (Active+RMR) and compare them to pure Active Calories.

  • That is what I thought. I understand that, the difference in terminology, but even calculating manually, there is no coincidence in what it should be. I mean, it would be related due to a non-linearity in the behaviour of the model, but if we consider it lineal it is off. For two activities, one with 1410kCals over 2.1 hours(02:06:07, almost 2.1) and the other with 299kCals over 58 mins having 2003kCals on rest, when I do maths, numbers does not match.

  • Never mind. I have just refreshed it and numbers updated as they should be. I insist it is somewhat odd, as numbers were slightly off but could not find a mathematical explanation. Maybe was some anxiety Grin. Thanks for the answer!

  • Yes me too! MFP is not calculating my garmin step calories. It has me at 0 calories burned for 17,000 steps.

  • I would like to turn off active calories..is that possible?

Well, you could stay all day in the bed doing nothing. Or just stop wearing the watch.
