Airpods connect/disconnect to iPhone

I recently got a Fenix 8 47 mm AMOLED and really love it HOWEVER, for some reason my Airpods have stopped working with my iphone. I do not want to connect the airpods to the watch and haven'r done so eather, but not when I want to use the airpods with my phone, they keep connecting and disconnecting instantly. I know its the garmin watch / app spooking because they work perfect when the watch is disconnected.

I have also tried resetting the airpod connection with my iphone but with the same results.

Anyone else experienced this and know how to solve it?

  • I think Apple has probably had to replace more AirPods than Garmin has had to replace watches. It took a while for existing users to link the their AirPods issue with their Garmin devices. I’m sure that Apple is less than happy with Garmin over that right now.

  • The issue is most likely not the physical device but rather the Connect application.

Multiple different devices has been mentioned in this thread.

But that also makes this a more pressing issue to be honest, if its software based it’s easier to fix than hardware.

Embarrassing that it’s still a issue after multiple months.

For me, I give Garmin until the end of the month to sort the issue before I sell my Instinct 3 and buy a Apple Watch instead.

  • Yeah it happens on my Fenix 8 watch and my 840 bike computer. It is absolutely the Connect app and should be something they know they changed as it didnt happen before a few months ago, and they know what changes they made to their bluetooth code. For a product category where most will be listening to music (exercise), it seem nuts that they wouldnt act like this was extremely high priority. I am about ready to sell my Garmin stuff and just go to Wahoo/Whoop instead.

  • Yeah, I’m selling it too, will switch to Coros - I tried and could connect to AirPods perfectly

  • It's interesting because the issue was horrible when I first took my watch out of the box and configured but after force updating the watch and cycle the bluetooth permission for Connect app and quitting the app, later in the day it just stopped having the issue.  I'm listening to music right now while the Connect app is open.  I've gotten disconnected maybe 2 or 3 times in the last day which is probably not more than normal since I use AirPods for many hours a day.

Yeah it's a frustrating issue and experience but whatever I did it went away.  IDK if a connect app update hit and that's really what fixed it or just the cycling of toggles made it go away.

  • Same here, Garmin EDGE 1050, Airpods 2 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max

  • Koponet - can you use your airpods without interruption if you follow the steps in this thread to prevent the Garmin Connect app from launching when your edge establishes a bluetooth connection with your iphone?  This has worked consistently for me, but I miss the features I’ve lost by not having connect running while I ride.

  • Garmin SP — I see that Garmin has released another new version of Garmin Connect (5.27.3). Since I (and many others participating in/following this thread) have successfully worked around the airpod disconnect issue by configuring our iphones to not launch Garmin Connect when our garmin devices establish bluetooth connections to our iPhones, I’m unable to see whether this new update addresses/resolves the iphone disconnect issue without affirmatively changing my iphone’s bluetooth configuration.  Happy to do so if this new update addresses / is intended to resolve the airpod disconnect issue, but REALLY don’t want to interrupt my rides/training to reconfigure my iphone if this update does not address the iphone disconnect issue.  I (and, i’m sure, others following this thread) woud greatly appreciate any insight you could provide — HAPPY to help test this update if it’s intended to address our issue — any clarification you could provide would be appreciated.

  • Good question. So far, I’ve been disabling the Bluetooth connection on the Edge (which might prevent the Connect app from launching) and re-enabling it after the workout to sync.

  • No, it still does not work under the newest app. I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max and put music on before opening up the Connect app. I was able to connect to my Edge 840 bike computer and Varia 820 with no issues. The instant I connected my Fenix 8 watch to the Connect app, the app kicked me off my Airpod connection. Still annoying, still doesnt work.
