Airpods connect/disconnect to iPhone

I recently got a Fenix 8 47 mm AMOLED and really love it HOWEVER, for some reason my Airpods have stopped working with my iphone. I do not want to connect the airpods to the watch and haven'r done so eather, but not when I want to use the airpods with my phone, they keep connecting and disconnecting instantly. I know its the garmin watch / app spooking because they work perfect when the watch is disconnected.

I have also tried resetting the airpod connection with my iphone but with the same results.

Anyone else experienced this and know how to solve it?

  • Garmin SP -- my iPhone recently updated Garmin Connect to a new version (5.27.2).  Does this new version have any changes to address the AirPod disconnect issue?  My phone's currently configured to not launch Garmin Connect when using my Edge (and my AirPods no longer disconnect while riding/using my edge).  Happy to resume using Garmin connect while I'm using my edge and AirPods, if this update's intended to address the AirPods / connect app disconnect issue, let us know so I/we can provide feedback if appropriate.  Thanks!

  • Brand new FR970 just took out of the box this morning.  Updated to latest 16.28 having issue.  Issue stops when I quit Connect app or disallow it access to the watch through iOS settings.

    Details:

    FR970 - 16.28

    iPhone 16 Pro - 26.6

    Connect app - 5.27.2.1

    AirPods Pro 3

10+ years in software so I understand you need responsive and intelligent end users to properly investigate.  Send me an email and I'm happy to help.

Edit:  I thought 16.28 was latest but it was just the watch and Connect not wanting to update.  But it sounds like the latest doesn't even fix it.

  • ZachPollack — thanks for the update, looks like you’ve answered my question above — namely that  the recent 5.27.2.1 update to the Garmin Connect iphone app does not resolve the airpod pro 3 disconnect issue.   I’ll continue to keep my Garmin Connect app closed and continue to prevent Garmin Connect from starting/loading when  my  Edge 1030+ connects to my iphone via  bluetooth.

  • Could u tell me how u did this?

got the same issue with my Edge Explore 2 and AirPods Pro 3

  • 8720333 - the Garmin Connect iPhone app installs itself to launch/run in the background on your iPhone whenever your Garmin device (your Edge) connects to your iPhone via bluetooth.  So, by default, Garmin Connect is running on your iPhone whenever it connects to your paired Garmin device.  My iPhone stopped disconnecting from my AirPod Pro 3s after I stopped Garmin Connect from running on my iPhone while using my AirPods Pro 3s.  I did this by a) turning on my paired Garmin device while near my iPhone, b) opening settings>bluetooth on my iPhone, c) select the bluetooth connection for your Garmin device, d) under the section "Apps allowed to connect," turn off the switch next to the Connect app.  I left the "Share System Notifications" switch turned on and my Edge 1030+ displays texts and call notifications while I'm riding.  Hope this helps.

  • Edit: I'm actually using airpods pro 3. just forgot which gen I was on.

I'm also having the issue described here. using a Garmin Instinct 2x tactical, airpods pro 2, and an iphone 17 pro max. Pretty frustrating that as soon as I set up my watch and tried to get my airpods in for a run it started going crazy and made the airpods completely unusable. Should I return my new Garmin?

I tried disallowing the connect app to use bluetooth to access the watch and that did seem to solve the issue, but seems completely antithetical to how this system is supposed to work. I cannot sync the watch and my phone if I leave it with the solution. I use my airpods all the time, and this is definitely a dealbreaker for me with Garmin if this isn't getting fixed soon.

    • I’ve been a Garmin user for 10 years. I own 5 watches and an In-Reach 2. They’ve had their share of minor issues in the past that were resolved quickly, but this one has been going on for months. I hope it’s a top priority right now and a resolution comes soon.
  • It has been months since this issue was first reported and they don't seem to be very communicative about it, so I wouldn't keep my hopes up. Their app/firmware is abusing Apple's bluetooth to a point where it makes the connection to the Airpods fail. I run a hardware/sofrware engineering company and would never react this way to a customer service issue, especially one as prevalent as this seems and ESPECIALLY NOT if I had the resources that Garmin does. Absolutely unacceptable.

  • exact same issue with me -  AirPods Pro (2nd gen) + Venu 4.

Garmin service centre refused to acknowledge the issue at first.  When I found out other issues, they had no choice but gave me a refurbished watch as it's still under warranty.  But I encountered the exact same issue with that refurbished watch.................
