Duplicate entries in Apple Health

I am on iOS 11 with the latest version of Garmin Connect. When looking in Apple Health I see lots of duplicate entries (same time and duration) from Garmin Connect in my activities. A quick Google shows people were having this issue back in 2015 but I've not seen any simple solution to stop it from happening and it is becoming more and more irritating.

I know Apple Health may not be the best application but I use it as a central repository.

Does anyone have a simple solution for this (other than buying an Apple Watch and using a Wahoo Tickr with the watch).

thanks

Alex

  • Heart rate , steps and workouts

  • I noticed mine started around Nov 20 (the 2 years of GC data in AH prior to that was single entries). In some cases I had 25-30 duplicates for a single workout!

i went through the trouble of deleting all dupes. Removed any 3rd party apps like Rungap, Healthfit, etc. I only go from GC to AH. Now 24hrs later and checking, I am seeing dupes return. Some are up to 3-5x already including ones I previously cleaned up.

What did Garmin do?? Luckily AH seems to be recognizing them as dupes (exercise minutes don’t increase) but still ...

  • Not what they did.. it's more what they are not doing.  Not fixing it.  It's a known issue for years.  Look at the date stamp on the first post in this thread.

I spent about three hours testing and on the phone with both Apple and Garmin support.  Both confirmed the transfer of data is a simple two sync and the only way to change that is by the data points you choose in Settings>Health>Connect.

Apple was empathetic.  I was able to screen share to show them the duplication live.  Nothing they can do and their position was...   We're bigger than Garmin, so it's up to Garmin to instigate a resolution with us.  Apparently this hasn't happened.

Garmin support took time to document the issue even though they were able to find reports going back years.  They actually found this thread while I was on the call with them.  I sent screen caps and shared logs.  They said the issue is escalated and would likely result in a firmware update.  I noted that it is a know issue, documented for years and I wasn't optimistic it would be corrected given how long it is ongoing....  There were crickets on the other end of the call.

I see what you see..  prior to a certain point the activities don't duplicate.  Not sure if that is a hard date or if it is a rolling period, IE the past 25 days.  I suspect it is the latter.  I am trying to identify a data point to omit that might break the duplication.  I am excluding water, weight, BMI and BF as I have those sync'd from other trackers.

Also testing whether renaming the activities (or otherwise modifying them) in Connect does anything.  That would be an easy fix...

Fortunate that AH doesn't count all the dupes in the daily totals or the exercise ring would be wildly inaccurate.  That said, the monthly totals are impacted by every duplication.  Both the number of exercise for the calendar and the total time for that month are updated with each duplicate.  Based on the monthly totals I am an Ironman contender.

  • great job bumping all the threads to the top.

  • As long as no one is doing anything but complaining on this forum that Garmin said time and time again that they don't read, this will not change.

  • what else can one do?

  • Tweet @garmin, call them, tweet of tech sites that write articles about Garmin, 1* them on the app store, open tickets with garmin support

  • Sadly, I don't do Twitter.

  • I’m new to Apple Watch just last weekend and this is Happening all week to me !  Repeats the same workout 10,20,30 times and I delete and some just keep coming back !  Very frustrating and health info is inaccurate as a results !  It’s all coming from Connect tho!

  • Has anyone gotten a response from Garmin ?  This is super frustrating
