Expedition badges bugged

I started the Great Wall expedition earlier today and after about 22k steps I synced my Forerunner 945 and earned the badge. I then started the Grand Canyon Rim Trail expedition and was awarded the badge immediately even though I didn't get the necessary steps. It must have checked the steps for the day and awarded me the badge. I didn't start another expedition since I suspects it will again add 22k steps towards the badge.

I am having the same problem: Every cycling activity gets counted towards the expedition badges. The cycled distances are counted as expedition/hike distance. I am using a Forerunner 235 and distances are set to km (not miles).

  • Cuantos escalones se considera un piso? He subido varios y me aparece a 0. Por cierto la actividad de escaladora es para subir escaleras?

    Mil gracias

  • Steps are not used for climbing. For climbing the ascent is used and displayed as floors climbed. To get floors climbed you need to take steps during the ascent. Using an elevator will not count as floors climbed, but it should count if you are walking at the spot during the ride up. A floor is about 3 meters.

Activities are not used or required.

You need a watch with barometric altimeter.

  • I'd like to thank for the information and assistance he has been providing in this thread. In echoing of much of what he has been saying I would like to help clarify the feature of the Expedition Badge Challenges.

The expedition badges are designed to take floors climbed and steps from activity tracking into account when tracking progress. The floors climbed feature requires a barometric altimeter and steps from the accelerometer on compatible devices. Activities recorded on the wearable will not count towards the expedition challenges as those are not the metrics the challenges are looking for. Any steps or floors climbed detected by the watch during a recorded activity however will count.

It is possible for a wearable to detect 'steps' when cycling if the accelerometer and altimeter data meet the requirements. These 'steps' detected by the watch would count towards the hike expeditions.

More information on the expedition challenges can be found here.

Just a note: AFAIK, that is only possible on models with firmware older than some three years. Recent models block the counting of steps when a cycling activity is in progress. They will not count any steps when using a cycling activity. And the same should apply to floors climbing. Some other activity profiles do the same - driving, and if I remember well, also swimming, perhaps rowing, and some others.

Everything you and e7andy are explaining had already been my understanding of how expedition challenges are *supposed* to work. However, that is not the case for me. Today, for example, I have a total of just 6300 steps. Also, I cycled about 30 kilometers (two activities with about 15 kilometers each). I started Machame Route of Kilimandscharo just today and already are at 35,3 of 62 kilometers.

  • Former MemberDo I have your permission to access your Garmin Connect account to take a look at a few things? If so, are there any other days than today to look at to see if we can pinpoint what is causing these activities to register towards these badges?

  • You have my permission to view my account. I would like to see the problem resolved for all concerned.  As far as other days almost every expedition I received had mileage counted from cycling. I will let you figure out the days

You have permission to access my Garmin Connect. April 3rd is a good example, as well as today (April 4th). I just synced my Forerunner 235 with ~500 steps and ~15 km of cycling from today. The Kilimandscharo badge went from 35 km yesterday evening to 50 km. Other days to look at are for example 20th/21st of March. Badges awarded in these two days are Inka Path (40 km) and Chilkoot Trail (53 km) with only a total of about 11.00 steps. Since March 17th I "earned" all expedition badges with 62 km or less.

  • Former Member Thank you for that information. Can I have permission to email you to further look into this for you?
