I started the Great Wall expedition earlier today and after about 22k steps I synced my Forerunner 945 and earned the badge. I then started the Grand Canyon Rim Trail expedition and was awarded the badge immediately even though I didn't get the necessary steps. It must have checked the steps for the day and awarded me the badge. I didn't start another expedition since I suspects it will again add 22k steps towards the badge.

As mentioned by 7853795. We have found through investigation that due to a difference in software design, there are some older models of Garmin wearables that will contribute distance to Hike Expeditions…
That is probably how Garmin implemented those badges. If you leave an expedition and join another one the steps from the day will count towards the new expedition. Garmin don't handle the shorter expeditions…
In the Garmin Connect app go to Challenges and you will see a list of the expeditions. When you select an expedition there's a button to start the expedition.
