No call notifications after Garmin Connect App update

Hi there,

after the last Garmin Connect app update (v 4.54.1) call notifications to Venu2 (SW 8.11) are not working anymore.

No changes were made to the setting (in the app as well on the watch).

All relevant setting are the same as before the app update (verified twice in the Garmin Connect app and on the watch too):

  • Smart Notifications - General Use - Allow notifications - All
  • Smart Notifications - During an Activity - Allow notifications - All

All other functionality like applications notifications, phone disconnect alerts etc. are working.

  1. Soft reset (by holding upper button till the watch shuts down) didn't fix the issue.
  2. Factory reset (System - Reset - Reset Default Settings) didn't fix the issue.

I was able to fix the issue by restoring previous Garmin Connect app (v 4.53) - so the source of the problem is the last GC app update for sure.

How could Garmin broke the basic functionality of the smart watch by the app update

I'm really disappointed. This is not why the customers pay the price of premium brand........

edit 2022/05/14:

Firmware of my  Venu2 has been updated yesterday to 9.17.
Call notifications are still working (with Garmin Connect app v 4.53).

edit 2022/05/29:

Garmin Connect v 4.55 didn't fix the issue - call notifications are no longer working right after update 4.53->4.55
I had to roll back to v 4.53 to get it fixed.

Based on responses (different models affected) the subject has been changed - removed "on Venu2".

Call notifications are finally working - Garmin Connect v 4.55.1.

  • Hi there,

    Thank you for your answer.

Yes, by orphan, I mean notifications that were deleted from the phone but still appear on the watch's notification widget.

I tried your procedure but GCM app deinstallation/reinstallation did not affect the config of the installed devices, so it did not force any reset.

I could not identifiy a file on the watch where these notifications would be managed.

    I found several old threads describing a similar issue but no clear solution until now;

    So still searching...

  • I tried your procedure but GCM app deinstallation/reinstallation did not affect the config of the installed devices, so it did not force any reset.

Ok, try the same, but remove the watch from the GCM app first (Device -> 3 dots upper right corner -> Remove device) and from the phone bluetooth devices (Forget device).
Next uninstall the GCM, restart the watch, install the GCM and pair the watch.
As I wrote above, I can't find the post with the procedure - it's possible I forgot this additional step.

  • Thanks again. I was finally able to reset the content of the notification widget simply by dissociating/re-associating the bluetooth connection on my phone !

In the phone's bluetooth menu (not in GCM but in Android settings), select forerunner 945 device, click on the gear icon and at the bottom right of next screen "dissociate". Then pair again the device from the same menu, enter the code displayed on the watch and wait for a few seconds.

  • By pairing the watch through phone's BT menu you risk having connection issues in future. Correctly, the pairing should be always done from within the GCM app, not from the BT menu. As long as it works for you, it is fine, just remember to redo it in the right way if you start having BT connectivity problems.

Another, a much less invasive solution for removing all notifications from the watch, is by going to the device settings, disabling Smart Notifications, syncing (the previous uncleared notifications still remain on the watch), and then enabling the Smart Notifications again. In the moment you re-enable the Smart Notifications, all past notifications are cleared.

  • Thank you. This is good to know, for next times even if I tried something similar unsuccefully here. At least simple solutions exist to solve this simple problem !
