No call notifications after Garmin Connect App update

Hi there,

after the last Garmin Connect app update (v 4.54.1) call notifications to Venu2 (SW 8.11) are not working anymore.

No changes were made to the setting (in the app as well on the watch).

All relevant setting are the same as before the app update (verified twice in the Garmin Connect app and on the watch too):

  • Smart Notifications - General Use - Allow notifications - All
  • Smart Notifications - During an Activity - Allow notifications - All

All other functionality like applications notifications, phone disconnect alerts etc. are working.

  1. Soft reset (by holding upper button till the watch shuts down) didn't fix the issue.
  2. Factory reset (System - Reset - Reset Default Settings) didn't fix the issue.

I was able to fix the issue by restoring previous Garmin Connect app (v 4.53) - so the source of the problem is the last GC app update for sure.

How could Garmin broke the basic functionality of the smart watch by the app update

I'm really disappointed. This is not why the customers pay the price of premium brand........

edit 2022/05/14:

Firmware of my  Venu2 has been updated yesterday to 9.17.
Call notifications are still working (with Garmin Connect app v 4.53).

edit 2022/05/29:

Garmin Connect v 4.55 didn't fix the issue - call notifications are no longer working right after update 4.53->4.55
I had to roll back to v 4.53 to get it fixed.

Based on responses (different models affected) the subject has been changed - removed "on Venu2".

edit 2022/06/01

Call notifications are finally working - Garmin Connect v 4.55.1.

I'm having doubts. Could this be an issue due to changes in newer Android versions? The old smartband I had been using during the week call alerts were totally gone, does 5 vibrates and then stops before the call is answered. A newer smartband does 3 vibrates and stops. In the past, both of them would keep vibrating until a call was answered/rejected.

Who here has currently a different smartwatch/fitness tracker band in use (with a current Android version) that keeps buzzing until a call is answered/rejected?

Wrong forum for this, but maybe someone knows how Garmin watches alert for incoming calls with an iPhone or Windows phone?

Added: Fitbit Charge 4 only two vibrations on incoming call Apparently the Fitbit Charge 4 has the same issue.

Same behavior on iPhone (a single vibration). I think the best would be requesting the change through https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/ The more people asks for the repeated vibrations, the higher chance for the change. The best would be a configurable behavior, so that the user can chose what fits him better.

On Android, there might be a workaround possible through the Notification Reminders feature in Android Settings » Accessibility. I did not test it myself, so cannot guarantee it really works for this purpose, but it may be worth of looking at: How to Enable Notification Reminders in Android Marshmallow

  • On Android, there might be a workaround possible through the Notification Reminders feature in Android Settings » Accessibility.

It can't be used as a workaround for this purpose unfortunately.

    1. The shortest interval for notifications reminder is 3 minutes
    2. It's available on Samsung phones/tablets only

My wife's Huawei Watch GT2 (42mm) vibrates all the time, there's Android 11 running on her phone.

There also some Android apps for the same purpose. Perhaps some can be tuned up better. Again, I cannot test them, so no guarantee. It is clear that it is not the ideal solution, but am afraid that getting the change done in Garmin Connect Mobile may take a long time, even if it is suddenly massively requested through their feature request form.

  • I think the problem might be related to having Garmin Explore or Garmin Golf apps installed as well as Garmin Connect. These apps also have responsibility for notifications.

In my case I had Explore installed with notifications disabled, even though I had notifications enabled for Connect. It seems that Explore settings trumped Connect settings. I have uninstalled Explore (I only installed it six weeks ago and it was updated on 26th May) and my notifications are working again. My guess is that the Explore update broke stuff rather than the Connect update.

I don't think this can be related to Android version.

Functionality of the watch is completely handled by the GCM app - try to install older version (from the time you remember the watch constantly vibrated) of GMC from the APKMirror - I expect it will fix the issue.

Thanks for all your ideas m4dx trux & eezytiger.  I am not that keen on trying with an old APK on my phone because I have a bunch of older Garmin device that are very hard to pair again after GCM is newly installed.

So until I'm fed up or the weekend is over, I'll be trying workarounds using Tasker (not very successful, it is possible to react to incoming calls but I haven't succeeded in triggering a notification, let alone the flood of notifications as was my plan) and dive in Android things like phone state listener (deprecated in Android 12) and telecommanager (new in Android 12) and see if I can get the tools working to brew an app, not that I have any Android programming skills, but it's fun to try (I hope Wink).

Maybe it is the wrong approach, I am not even sure the watch will react to and vibrate when it gets a notification _while_ the phone is ringing. I wonder if Garmin uses a ready-to-go subsystem/library for phone communication, notifications etc that is also used by other manufacturers. That would explain why some Fitbits also have this problem. In that case Garmin won't even be able to fix this.

  • Hello,

Thanks for the updates, nevertheless I am still facing a problem after GCM 4.55.2 upgrade, android phone restart, and watch soft reset (Forerunner 945):

The notification widget registered orphan notifications that I cannot delete.

With GCM 4.55.1 I received notifications from applications that were not authorized.

I tried to authorize all applications and synchronize again, or to deactivate/reactivate the notifications widgets but orphan notifications are still there.

Did anyone else experienced the same ?

  • Hi there,

By the "orphan notifications" - do you mean notifications on the watch whose are not on the phone anymore?

I read some post (I can't find it) with this problem - the fix was to reinstall the GCM app without need to factory reset the watch (uninstall the GCM app, restart the watch, install the app and pair the watch again).
