'Log Calories in MFP' button opens MyFitnessPal website in a browser and not the App

Yesterday for no apparent reason the 'Log Calories in MFP' button opens MyFitnessPal website in a browser and not the MyFitnessPal App as it has always done previously.

I have made no changes to either account credentials.

Here's what I've tried to resolve it:

  1. I disconnected the two accounts and reconnected -no change.
  2. I uninstalled and reinstalled the MFP app - no change
  3. I uninstalled the reinstalled the Garmin Connect app - no change
  4. I have compared the permissions for both apps on my Wife's phone (we have identical phones) and they are the same.

Any data I enter into the MFP app is synced and reflected in the Garmin Connect app but no matter what I do I can't get the MFP app to launch when I click 'Log Calories in MFP' button.

In addition to this when I am directed to the MFP website to log calories  I'm always taken to the same page which is the shared food diary of a person I've never heard of and not my own. Fortunately for this person her diary is marked as private so I'm denied access.

Has anybody else experienced this and if so do you have a solution please

  • I think it has to do with the links the phone is registered to open by default. i.e. myfitnellpal.com opens with app. Something like that. Can't check my device to prove it as I don't know what the links used to be. Currently set to myfitnesspal.app.link and myfitnesspal-alternate.app.link. Either MFP is missing a link it once had, or Garmin is now not using these links, but direct to myfitnesspal.com.

For instance, in you go to www.netflix.com, it automatically opens the app (if installed) because that is a 'supported' link.

    Either way. It doesn't work.

    I have MFP 21.4.1 and Connect 4.40

Anyone having issues with different versions?

  • Yeah, the same for me ffs... started around 2 days ago

  • OK, using MFP 21.3.1 and Connect 4.39, there is no issue.

Upgraded Connect to 4.40, still no issue.

Upgraded MTP to 21.4.1. Still works.......

However, for some reason I get login failed trying to login MFP. So, I think I have found the issue.

When I try on my non-test phone, it opens the app THEN before letting me in redirects to the website. So Connect is doing what it should. The issue is with MFP.

Could roll back to 21.3.1 of MFP (apkmirror.com)

  • My Garmin Connect version is 4.40. The MyFitnessPall App is version 21.4.1. This same issue started happening to me about a week ago.

  • Definitely think this is an MFP issue, no matter what they might say.

  • definitely MFP. i have witnessed Garmin Connect opening the MFP app, which then redirects to the website. i've tried the past versions of MFP and Connect in a number of combinations too.

  • And, if you kill MFP (Force Stop) and then try and open it through GC, it starts running again. So GC MUST be calling MFP app.

  • Identical issue. Should have been fixed by now. Both companies worth millions. End user experience not good enough. I don't want to go to twitter to rant - but there really should be an update from HC or MFP about the problem by now. Not. Good. Enough.

  • Maybe MFP have realised how much advertising its users are missing - by being able to go directly to the 'diary' through Garmin Connect, without having to navigate past the home page!
