Garmin Express with MacBook Air M1

I have recently migrated from a Windows PC to a MacBook Air (M1) running BigSur 11.2. Garmin Express will not detect my Fenix 5X. the watch is set to Mass storage and I have it connected to the MacBook via the watch charging cable connected to a USB-A to Thunderbolt adapter. When connected, the watch is charging. Any clue about resolving this issue ?

Thanks in advance.

  • Computer 'sees' Forerunner watch, but GE cannot, so no download.

Garmin needs to fix this ASAP.

  • This is absolutely Garmin's issue to resolve and not Apple!

It is disgraceful that this forum exits on the Garmin website however they fail to respond or provide any assistance, help or guideance. This is extremely poor customer service considering we have all supported Garmin's corporate profits by purchasing their expensive products.

Unfortunately I have a BMW supplied Navigator V so have no option but to continue using the device despite now now having no ability to now upload or download my data. BMW should dump Garmin as a supplier as it reflects extremely poorly on BMW to have a partner who doesnt care less about its customers.

I have a Mac Air M1 Chip with Big Sur and despite trying 1) a Garmin issued usb cable through a USB hub, 2) trying a C️-USB/USB adaptor, 3) trying  a USB/micro usb cable, nothing works.  4) I even tried Android file transfer which did not work. 5) Garmin Express doesnt even show up in Security/Privacy,Files&Folders which was the advice the Garmin website provided.

    Unbelievable.

  • Stuck in a foreign country with my Edge 530 and my MacBook Air M1... and no possibility to load a map. Thanks Garmin! Switching to Wahoo because of this, as soon as the Elemnt Roam become available again. This should have been solved more than a year ago.

  • I thought I had this issue, but it turned out to be a problem with the cable I was using to connect my Edge 530 to my MacBook Air M1... With the right cable, Garmin Express works fine on the M1, no problem at all.

  • It works fine. If it's not working, its probably because you're using the wrong cable. I thought I had this issue with my Edge 530 and my MacBook Air M1... turns out using the correct cable makes it work just fine.

  • Thanks @paulbeelen as this give me hope. I have used the original Garmin cable connected to Apple’s own USB-C adapter and the Garmin Express still does not recognise my Navigator V. If you have been able to succeed then I can only suggest that the Mac has some settings which need tweaking. Again this should be Garmin’s responsibility to advise its customers what needs to be done on a Mac in order to allow their products to function as promised. Garmin’s existing troubleshooting advice is woefully inadequate.

  • Not for me. Tried replacing the cable 2x still does not sync

  • I have 2 MacBook Pro - one Intel, one Apple Silicon. Same setup and BMW Motorrad Navigator VI is not detected on the M1. Intel works fine. I repeat - same setup (same USB-C cable, adapter)

  • Thanks for this heads up. I pulled out my old MacBook Pro (2012 model so Intel) and yes my Garmin connected immediately. Same cables directly connected to MacBook Air M1 don’t work.
is it possible that the USB port is not getting enough power? How much power does the Garmin need from the port to connect?
This is definitely an issue for Garmin to rectify and advise it’s customers.
Why is Garmin ignoring this issue and not working with Apple to resolve??
