Map update problem with Garmin Express

I have attempted to update the maps on my Nuvi with the old installer. I was then forced to install the Garmin Express program to do so. The maps and other software updates downloaded alright. However, they never installed on my unit (no warning, no error messages during 5 hours).

I then went to MyDashboard online with the latest Firefox browser. The Garmin site never recognized that the latest Garmin Communicator module was already installed. I then used Internet Expplorer to log into MyGarmin. When I went to the maps update section, I was told that a map update failed and instructed to double-click on the file to start the installation process. However, I never found the bloody file on my computer. I was also offered the choice to entirely remove Garmin Express from my computer. I did so and logged back into MyDashboard. When I attempted to re-download the maps I was again told to install Garmin Express. I did so and I was then informed that it installed correctly. However, the program is now so sluggish that it does not recognize my unit when plugged-in and won't let me register it.

What the hell is going on with your map update process? Is there a solution to my problems?

Frustrated and angry,
  • My exact sentiments, I work in the radar engineering business and have 20 plus years working with electronics. I get them, they get me. But I have had constant problems with my Garmin devices ever since Garmin decided to stop using Tele Atlas Maps and started using Navteq maps. That could be a complete coincidence but it is true nevertheless. Garmin MapUpdater and Garmin express were/are neatly packaged software releases but severely lack the performance worthy of the Garmin name. Garmin mapping products are clearly superior to anything else on the market but at the same time they lack superior software updates to the people that spend money on their products. My intention here is not to bash the Garmin software team but to motivate them into releasing a product that they may be proud of and that will several unsuccessful attempts to load thus leaving me with a totally useless workday.

Really? There were very few complaints about MapUpdater and to this day many still use it. I made the switch to Express a while back and while a few folks have issues the vast majority (of the millions that use it), including me, don't.

I suggest that if you've struggled with both MapUpdater and Express there is an issue somewhere within your system.

  • I got an issue that the garmin express stall when i click the updating botton and i have tried several times. it still happens like that. i have connected the gps to computer.
My problem with Garmen Express is that I could not connect wirelessly to my computer however I could connect to my smart phone. Once I removed Garmen Express, my computer connected. I imagine that other users will have the same problem. Looks like garmen has a big software problem.

Garmin Express is compatible with DSL or Cable High Speed Internet Connections. We do not support any other type of Internet Connection such as Satellite, Mobile Hot-spot, or Dial-up. Is your computer connected to a DSL or Cable High Speed modem/router? Have you tried deleting the device from Express then adding it back again? I do not see any devices registered to your JOEH11 account. What device are you working with? Please try the FAQ article below, then let us know where you're having troubles.

What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

  • I have just spent 6 hours trying to download the North America 2015.30 update to my Nuvi 2455LMT using Garmin Express. The update has failed repeatedly at the 3%, 5% and now at the 62% mark. The error message states "There was an error communicating with the Garmin servers. Please try again later". This is unsatisfactory - Garmin please acknowledge that you have a problem and do something about it.
  • Well it may not be a Garmin problem. You may wish to run through this FAQ

and also ensure you're running the latest version of Express.

If it is an account issue the Express team should be along shortly to help.
  • I do have the latest version of express - version 3.2.27 - there are no additional updates available. I have sent an email to Garmin Support desk and got a canned reply that they would respond within 3 business days.

Here's the Fix for Garmin Express and its Map Updates

Spoke to Garmin today about maps not loading with Garmin Express. Seems the issue is that that even though Garmin Express SAYS it's done, it's really not! To know when it actually is, open Resource Manager (in Windows) and find gmapupdate.img and any other garmin (nuvi) files on whatever drives your gps is attached to – as long as any files are still shown in Resource Manager, the update is not complete. Just keep your GPS plugged into your computer and expect it to take another 45 more minutes or so. When the files close in Resource Manager, unplug your gps and voila!

Yes, it's crazy. But it works!
  • Having successfully used Express for years I'm afraid that is wrong. Whenever Express has told me it's complete it's been complete and I've been able to do a safe eject.
  • This is passing the buck. I download all the time so if Garmin Express fails it's NOT the fault of my computer. I have downloaded updates before and it has worked. If there is a problem with the download why doesn't Garmin Express say so instead of leaving the user hanging for hours with no response? I have signed up for lifetime downloads and I expect Garmin to keep their end of the bargain.
