After updating Garmin Express 7.20.0.0 maps cannot be installed on PC

After updating Garmin Express to version 7.20.0.0 I Installed City Navigator Europe 2025.10 onto my Zumo XT.

However, trying to install the map to my PC failed every time (looking at the progress bar it seemed like download succeeded, but installation failed). Tried on another PC using same version (7.20.0.0) but got exactly the same problem.

Removing Garmin Express and reinstalling did not help.

I managed to revert to the previous version of Garmin Express (7.19.0.0) et voila, problem solved. Did the same on the other PC with the same result.

Contacted Garmin Product support about this and their aswer was that "they were happy with my feedback" ....

On a side note: would be interesting to know where older versions can be downloaded (had to restore a system backup to revert to older versions)

  • What device are you trying to update and have you been successful doing so in the past.  Is there some reason you are trying to use Basecamp as opposed to just using Garmin Express?

  • I'm not trying to update my zumo xt2, I'm trying to download "city navigator north america 2024.20" to my computer. which is required to import into Basecamp to use the detailed mapping function.  I'm a semi-pro endurance motorcycle rider stepping up my technology/mapping/routing system for "scavenger hunts" and Basecamp is the way to go as streets and trips, and mapsource have both been replaced with Basecamp.  But installing the city navigator is essential to have the mapping capabilities requiired.  and Basecamp directs garmin gps users with lifetime map updates to install express, download city navigator to computer, then upload to basecamp.  Basecamp has better options for routing multiple day rallies like the Iron Butt Rally. ie no limit on stops, calculated arrival departure time for each stop(when you're sleeping 4 hours a day and counting every second while traveling 10,000+ miles in 11 days with specific times required to be at checkpoints to avoid being disqualified, this is essential), ability to delete or add stops while in transit etc.  I run two gps while on a "scavenger hunt" one to stay planned route and another for alternative routes, all capable with Basecamp(from what I've been told) I'm still trying to get to the point of trying out the program.

I really dont think it's a lack of memory issue.  It didn't download to 100 percent before I cleared more memory. At that point I got a "update failed" message.  Now, it downloads to 100% and a "map changes failed" message.

i found anther thread on a similar issue.  however I do not get a "fail to update" message. I get a "map changes failed" message.  I dont understand the solution, but heres the link to it

  • You started this thread by stating “I have 16 g free disc space on my computer” and now you are talking about memory (“I don’t think t's a lack of memory issue.”). Disk space and memory are two different things.  Do you have the suggested 20 GB free on the disk?

  • i don't know.  all I know is that I started with getting one type of error message, deleted a bunch of stuff to create more room, then got a different kind of error message. the first did not reach the 100% mark, the second (and each after, does)

  • Did you leave it updating then go away? What you're seeing is likely due to the download of files completing but then Widows pops up a message saying ' do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer' or something similar. If you miss that Windows prompt Express cannot complete the map installation. Run Express again, it shouldn't need to install the files again, and act on the Windows prompt.

  • Hi - just to say I had the same problem - neither 7.20.1.0 nor running as admin worked.  I uninstalled and reverted to 7.19.0.0 and then it worked fine.  Thanks to the person that posted the link to previous versions.

  • In my version of Windows 10 Home, the ",,,,allow changes ....." prompt occurs when I launch Express as admin, not after installation complete.....?

  • On mine it comes after Express has downloaded the files as that's the point that Express installs the map to the system, the first part of the map update is simply downloading files so no need to get permission to allow changes.

  • The wonders of Windows - avoid consistency at all costs !

  • Same thing happened to me. I updated GE to 7.20.1.0. Then I started to update maps of my nuvi 3597 to eu 2025.1. Process showed an error after 5-10 minutes. Tried to start GE using admin rights, but did not help. The I uninstalled GE and reinstalled it with 7.20.1.0 once more. Failed as before.

After reading this hint, I reinstalled GE, downlevelled to 7.19.0.0. It finally worked.

    Thanks for good hints.
