Express 7.18.0 deletes all activities

After installing the new Express version 7.18.0 and syncing my Forerunner 45, I found that all saved activities were gone. The log was empty.

I had this trouble before with version 7.13.0 and ask that this be corrected, thank you very much!

I just updated Express 7.18.1. When the deleting issue occurred I deleted 7.18 and installed the 17.7 (??), which was working ok.

There’s still an issue on Windows 10 with 18.8.1.

I synced after installing 7.18.1 and watched as some files in my computer ‘Downloads’ folder disappeared. I had copied files there 3 days ago. They also remained during my sync today with previous 17.7 Express version. Files remained OK in Fenix.

There’s no reason that Garmin should delete files not associated with Garmin from my computer

  • Thank you Chris. Tested and 7.18.1 appears to be OK although maybe by coincidence USB connect after install is very unreliable and either fails to connect or dropping. Maybe another failing cable...

Are you able to share with us the Garmin protocol for activity file retention. Is it number of FIT files, days, weeks, months, based on available storage…….?

User seilgramp wrote, “Not necessarily needed and can even cause issues if you have excessive activities stored on your watch”. Supposing adequate available storage, is that true and if so then what ‘issues’ might occur?

Certain Forerunner 955 watch functions appear to rely on periodic retention of activity FIT files. Given Garmin’s track record of Express updates causing all activity FIT file deletion (and subsequently being resolved with a version update to retain FIT files) it would be helpful to understand Garmin’s activity FIT retention policy.

  • I tried V7.18.1 and confirmed that it fixed the problem; also, I did not see any files disappear from the "downloads" folder as someone else reported. However, I did notice something a little odd with the desktop shortcut. With previous updates, the old icon was always deleted and a new one created (I notice this because the new one is at a different place on the desktop). This time that didn't happen. I had previously renamed the shortcut from "Garmin Express" to "Garmin Express 7.17.3" which may be the reason; however, when (after the update) I renamed it to "Garmin Express 7.18.1" the icon went blank!

Normally I wouldn't rename it - this was just a temporary measure while I was investigating the issues - so I'll see in a few days' time whether it happens when I haven't done so.

  • Could anyone check if updated version do not delete rides / activities in device history menu?

  • Nigel__H already did, but I can confirm that version 7.18.1.0 does not delete rides / activities in the device history menu.
I run Windows 10 Home 64bit 22H2 and my device is Edge Explore 2.

  • I doubt and too much work. I count it as lost one and be sad about it. But hopefully they fix the swimrun/multisport before release.
