WMI Host Provider high CPU when running Garmin Express

This was also reported in the thread about GE using 20% CPU, but I thought the WMI-specific issue should be highlighted in its own thread. The problem was also reported in the Forerunner 945 forum. I had been trying to figure this out for a while until I saw that post. Sure enough, quitting out of GE made the high WMI CPU usage stop.

GE 6.19.3.0

  • Agree. Their directors/upper management needs to find a better balance between number of supported devices and software features and manpower.  I imagine the engineers are quite stressed.

  • Apart from unchecking "keep GE running in the background" or "automatically launch GE.." you may restart the Windows Management Instrumentation Service (to get there via WIN+R and services.msc). This service manages WmiPrvSE and a restart reduces the CPU usage by WMI significantly. May be setting the startup type of Windows Management Instrumentation Service to "Atomatic (delayed start)" may help, but that will depend on your PC configuration. I am worried that this issue in GE will make my PC vulnerable for possible hackers trying to access my network; WMI is a hardware oriented service so any leaks should be considered and repaired as first priority.

  • For me at least 7.1.0.0 fixed the issue. According to task manager, no 10-15% load from WMI Host Provider.

  • Initial glance having just updated it confirms that this issue has probably been addressed and no CPU spikes exist.

I am far from jumping to any premature and very non-informed conclusions but it would be quite funny if this problem had been somehow related to the ransomware attack Garmin was subject to recently...! Certainly I am hoping that nothing got planted from that direction on my PC ;-)

In either case it would be really good for GarminSupport to:

    1. Update release notes (they never are updated in a good time, I am sorry to say/write),

    2. Advise what the problem actually was - as this issue had been in place over the last 8 months.

  • The issue appears fixed for me too in the latest release.  It's still a dreadfully written piece of software though.  When not minimised but idle it is using about 6% of the CPU and 30% of the GPU.

It is related to the hack in the sense that Garmin has a slapdash approach to software they release and it's clear they also had the same philosophy for cyber security and disaster recovery.

Release notes are a form of honesty. They admit past mistakes. Garmin doesn't release these often for the same reason it has still yet fully to admit it was pwned and ransomed.

  • Also confirming that GE 7.1.0.0 has apparently fixed this issue.

  • 7.1.0 fixes it for me also.

  • Version 7.1.0.0 fixes it for me - WMI Provider Host runs at  0% to 1.4% CPU.

The strange thing is I downloaded a version 7 a week or two ago and it did not fix it so presumably this is a newer version 7.

Anyway, I am (at last) a happy bunny.

I opened a money court claim against Garmin here and 1 of issues listed was this. I can only assume they were looking to fix it quickly to shut me up.

  • Oh, I'm sure that must be it.

On another note, I'd forgotten how much more convenient it is to have Express running all the time.
