Nuvi 2589LM - Number of points allowed in a route on BaseCamp

Hello All
I m from Turkey and this is my first post on forum. I like to ride scooter motorbike and travel long distances. That is why Google Earth and navigation device important for me.
I do not like to use navigation like "take me and ride to this point". I like to create my own route on Google Earth by thousands of clicks and when I ride the scooter follow this line. From this point I came across BaseCamp software on Youtube doing this my dream.
I bought a car navigation Garmin Nuvi 2589LM last week and installed on my scooter. Wish to have a Zumo model but they are so expensive !!!

I planning a scooter tour at the and of May 2016 from Bodrum-Turkey to Greece and islands. As usual I prepeared a road map on Google Earth in one month. If you are interested in here is my route map - http://bit.ly/scooterileyunanistanturu and my Facebook trip site https://www.facebook.com/scooterileyunanistanturu/

I exported my map (KMZ file) from Google Earth to BaseCamp as a track. I can see the roads (27000points-5800km) I will follow and hundreds of waypoint marks. I converted this track to route on BaseCamp and transferred to my Nuvi device. While I convert it I thicked "Choose the number of points automatically" option. Because If I limit it I was loosing points on track and lines were going directly. :(

I do not want to write to much. I did not see my route plan on Nuvi because of 200 points limit on routes after I ve red forums on internet. I was really disappointment and still crying.

Ok I said myself the reason might be slow working on navigation device. I devided my track per 200 points and now I have 135 new diffirent tracks. (Track 001…Track 135) Some of tracks are about 3-5km due to road bends, some of them are 100km due to straight road.

Uploaded all these tracks to Nuvi navigation. At this time I can see 135 items in Trip Planner. Everything seems ok. As I said some tracks are 5km which will takes change the another trip in 6 munites. This is very annoying while ride the scooter :(
In my opinion there should be a option in Trip Planner menu on Nuvi navigation to add all these tracks each other like a batch file. I m sure It is not difficult to do this.

I wrote a story :) Thank you for reading and hope Garmin developers can see my post :)
Have a great days to all.
  • You're creating your routes the wrong way which is why you're struggling. Decide on your start and end point in BaseCamp. Let BaseCamp calculate the route. Add viapoints as necessary to make the route go the way you want.

I find for routes of hundreds of miles you only need a few via points, but you may need more. Note your nuvi can only accept up to 30 viapoints in a route, but you can have many more shaping points if needed.

Note your nuvi cannot read track files so you must send routes from BaseCamp.

    To be honestly the reason I start with Google Earth is;
    1. Satellite view
    2. Watch photos on my route by one click
    3. Easy to understand the type of road
    4. Share KMZ file with my friends, let them to edit it and re-send me
    5. Google Map on my mobile phone, tablet
    6. Easy to use. Maybe used to it.

Yes I m converting my track files to routes files before I send them to Nuvi.

I ve red lots of threads, complains on forums same as mine. My offer will solve this problem :)

Thank you for your quick reply.
  • Nothing to stop you using Google earth to import a route/track to Basecamp but then create the route on Basecamp using the method I've indicated that follows your imported route.

Given that BaseCamp can do what you want I can't see Garmin changing devices in any way, and in any case your suggestion won't work since if you were able to add routes (not tracks as you stated) in trip planner together they would soon exceed the waypoint limit. You're over complicating it by producing tracks/routes with hundreds of points when they're simply not needed.

As for 'complaints on other forums' about this I'd be surprised as I frequent quite a few and rarely are problems raised like the one you have.

Try exporting your route from Google Maps, Delorme, or whatever app you have, in gpx format with all turn points included. Then try copying that gpx route, including all turn points, shape, points, stops, vias, or whatever they are called directly into a gpx folder on the micro SD card in the Garmin Nuvi Device using the computer. Unplug the device from the computer, power down, reboot and wait. The Nuvi with Trip Planner may import all of your included points and separate those points into a large number or sequential 29 point routes.

Might not work in a gpx file from from Google Maps, as I do not use that App and have not tested it.

    Hi SUSSAMB
I managed to do as you explained. Now I got less points on BaseCamp Route.
Another problem now :) The roads (which is provided by Turkish developer Basarsoft) are much more detailed on my Nuvi. Also Google Earth is showing me lots of roads.
How can I see my Nuvi's map on BaseCamp software ? Even I installed OSM on both Nuvi & BaseCamp, Nuvi's map is more detailed.
    Thank you.

I exported Google Earth's KML file to GPX format with GPSBabel. I ve checked this GPX file on BaseCamp and seen waypoints & track.
I copied this GPX file into (nüvi 2589\Memory Card\Garmin\GPX) folder.
Turned on Nuvi. I ve seen the waypoints but not the road I ve draw on Google Earth.
Also due to it is not route I did not noticed it in Trip Planer. By the way when I turned on the Nuvi, it did not import track file.

  • With your nuvi connected the nuvi's map will appear in the Maps button on the toolbar. Just select it.

I see 6 maps on Nuvi but 4 maps in drop-box you said.
  • If some maps aren't showing run JaVaWa's Device Manager available here http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

You can use it to set maps to show in Basecamp.

I installed JaVaWa's Device Manager connected my Nuvi via USB. I see it on Removable discs.
I run JaVaWa's Device Manager bu says
No manageable Garmin devices or SD cards detected.
