Nuvi 2589LM - Number of points allowed in a route on BaseCamp

Hello All
I m from Turkey and this is my first post on forum. I like to ride scooter motorbike and travel long distances. That is why Google Earth and navigation device important for me.
I do not like to use navigation like "take me and ride to this point". I like to create my own route on Google Earth by thousands of clicks and when I ride the scooter follow this line. From this point I came across BaseCamp software on Youtube doing this my dream.
I bought a car navigation Garmin Nuvi 2589LM last week and installed on my scooter. Wish to have a Zumo model but they are so expensive !!!

I planning a scooter tour at the and of May 2016 from Bodrum-Turkey to Greece and islands. As usual I prepeared a road map on Google Earth in one month. If you are interested in here is my route map - http://bit.ly/scooterileyunanistanturu and my Facebook trip site https://www.facebook.com/scooterileyunanistanturu/

I exported my map (KMZ file) from Google Earth to BaseCamp as a track. I can see the roads (27000points-5800km) I will follow and hundreds of waypoint marks. I converted this track to route on BaseCamp and transferred to my Nuvi device. While I convert it I thicked "Choose the number of points automatically" option. Because If I limit it I was loosing points on track and lines were going directly. :(

I do not want to write to much. I did not see my route plan on Nuvi because of 200 points limit on routes after I ve red forums on internet. I was really disappointment and still crying.

Ok I said myself the reason might be slow working on navigation device. I devided my track per 200 points and now I have 135 new diffirent tracks. (Track 001…Track 135) Some of tracks are about 3-5km due to road bends, some of them are 100km due to straight road.

Uploaded all these tracks to Nuvi navigation. At this time I can see 135 items in Trip Planner. Everything seems ok. As I said some tracks are 5km which will takes change the another trip in 6 munites. This is very annoying while ride the scooter :(
In my opinion there should be a option in Trip Planner menu on Nuvi navigation to add all these tracks each other like a batch file. I m sure It is not difficult to do this.

I wrote a story :) Thank you for reading and hope Garmin developers can see my post :)
Have a great days to all.
  • You'll need to switch it to mass storage mode, see the JaVaWa webpage, Which devices does it work with, Note 3.

Garmin has updated or newly released a comprehensive support article for (almost?) all automotive devices (on use of Shape points) in the last few days. It's hard to find without Google, but . . . . https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B27edcdb0-0c86-11dd-dc9c-000000000000%7D

Perhaps Sussamb can interpret the steps for BaseCamp
  • Actually it's just an update of a previous FAQ to include the new Drive series ...

I ve been playing with JaVaWa Device Manager for the last 3 hours :)
I m lucky if I do not go crazy tonight :(

First attached picture : I clicked "Visible in BC" button for each map line and put a BC icon on lines.
Second attached picture : Each map details says Visible in BaseCamp : Yes

However I dont see the 2 maps red underlined in BC :(

Normally you never have to activate the show in BaseCamp for a gmapprom.img it should already been activated and/or BaseCamp will read them automatically if the nuvi is attached to the computer. Especialky if it has a Live time update.

How ever, the first time a long time is taken to read this map and you need to let it complete. If you have canceled it in the past many times or interrupted it my disconnecting the nuvi or shutting down basecamp then the product cache can be corrupted for this map. Close BaseCamp and try to clean the BaseCamp caches with JDM and then start BaseCamp again.

If you have a Lifetime on the nuvi, the most easy way is to run Garmin Express and install the map again with in the advanced options choose for Computer only, then the City Navigator map is installed dedicated on the computer.

To answer your original question: Number of points allowed in a route on BaseCamp
    30 via-points with in between 125 shaping points (30x125)
Mark the vi-point in the route properties iof a route in BaseCamp to: Don't warn.
  • However I dont see the 2 maps red underlined in BC :(

Adding to the above you will see in Basecamp a moving line underneath the map description in the left hand pane while Basecamp is indexing the map. Until that completes the map won't be available. This only happens the first time, once the map has been indexed it should be available in BaseCamp in future.

For Google (Maps) to BaseCamp this video gives you probably a heads up: https://youtu.be/r7URNEgmLko

Tracks/paths from Google Earth you can save as KML or GPX and directly import them into BaseCamp, no converter needed.
When converting tracks to routes, always use the direct activity profile to do that and then determine your own amount of via-points. If BaseCamp is doing it automatically for you, because you are in a car or motorcycle activity profile in BaseCamp it's most of the time rather messy the route result (way to much via-points).

Actually it's just an update of a previous FAQ to include the new Drive series ...

Although my experience with the Nuvi devices is rather limited, and my experience with the Drive devices is none, I am trying to learn.

It appears to me on first reading of the Drive features that M/C "Riders" and Truck "Drivers" may have a greater interest in upgrading than less demanding automotive users. If user verbal commands can be used to switch shape points (vias) on and off in active routes with the deluxe versions of the Drive devices, that may be almost as useful as being able to disable recalculation entirely.
