Made a "Track Flight" activity, and it works great!

Someone posted a thread on here a while back, complaining about how the Fenix 6 is useless because it can't track flights properly. As silly as that sounded to most of us, especially since it never even would have occurred to me to even try using the watch to track a flight, it got me thinking. So I made a copy of the "Track Me" activity, and called it "Track Flight", and then customized the datascreens. The results were great!

The watch couldn't get GPS lock at all in the first leg of my trip, a window seat in a 787. But to be fair, even my phone wasn't able to get a GPS lock in that plane, either... even on the tarmac. I think 787's just have way too much cabin isolation.

The second leg of my trip was in an Embraer regional jet, and the results were fantastic. Got a GPS lock right away, and worked perfectly all throughout the flight.

Anyways, here's how I configured my data screens - 2 pages, with the second page being the map. The first page shows distance (miles), timer, speed (miles per hour), GPS Elevation (the plane's actual elevation over sea level), Elevation (the altitude that the cabin is pressurized to), and GPS signal strength. It was a lot of fun watching how the cabin pressure altitude and actual altitude diverged during the flight. Watching the realtime ground speed during takeoff was fun, too.

Maybe this is due to a recent firmware update, but the watch had no problem with the extreme altitude or the extreme speed. I think previous reports said it cut out after 300mph? Mine showed 385mph just fine (which is as fast as the little jet went).

  • I was thinking for my next flight... Would be interesting to have in the final .fit file also the sp02 and (additionally to the baro altitude) the gps altitude recorded during flight... Does anybody know if this is something doable for any of these 2 parameters? Tried to look through the fora and internet in general but couldn't find anything...

  • Maybe there are developer fields (CIQ data fields) that do that. There is (not sure - I looked it it years ago) a muscle oxygen sensor (Moxy) with a CIQ data field.

But even without that extra data, looking at a recorded flight is a lot of fun, especially when it was in a small/light aircraft. Inside a large commercial aircraft not much chance of a detailed track. For correct altimeter calibration, use the same procedure as the pilot, see: Altimeter setting procedures

  • Thanks! great article for the altimeter calibration.

and yes, it surely is a fun thing already, I would just find it interesting to have a record of the oxigen saturation variation during the flight in the same activity file... possibility to have it comparing to the GPS altitude would make it even more interesting (though not sure about the resolution of the gathered data. But I would like to fdo this without buying an additional external sensor....

But I guess the integrated sp02 sensor reading is not really available during activities, as the measurement would require staying still...... so possibly it is not made available even to iQ fields as well?

Pity, Garmin did not consider one could stand still during ativities... Smiley

  • But I guess the integrated sp02 sensor reading is not really available during activities,

The tactix 7 supports sp02 readings inflight.

    baro altitude

The pressure altitude during a commercial flight will not exceed the 2500 meters mark because it is a pressurized cabin.

  • Well that's great, however this upgrade could cost me even bit more that getting a moxy sensor, possibly... Smiley so I think I'll stick to my Fenix 6 for the time being.......

  • The pressure altitude during a commercial flight will not exceed the 2500 meters mark because it is a pressurized cabin.

Oops, I was only thinking of small aircraft when writing about altimeter calibration. Sorry!

  • The pressure altitude during a commercial flight will not exceed the 2500 meters mark because it is a pressurized cabin.

Yeah right, that was reason to ask if there is any way to have the watch writing also the gps altitude field to the fit file.....

  • That a nice one. So, is it possible to record flight data, (speed, altitude, map position), during a commercial flight in pressurized cabin?
