Calendars (e.g., Google Calendar) and Epix Gen 2

BACKGROUND: My question is one that I have never thought about before using with my Garmin watches. You see, in the past, I limited my Garmin wearing to the workouts. I put on my Samsung (or other Wear OS smartwatch) for the rest of the day, so calendar synching has never been an issue. Now, with my Epix Gen 2, I would like it to be my all day watch. I looked around the forum (and on several search engines), but have found no direct answer.

QUESTION: Is it even possible to synch Google Calendar events so that they appear in my Garmin Epix Gen 2 watch when I select and click on my Garmin Calendar widget (I don't mean the notifications; I do get those.)? If it is possible, how is it done?

What I know I can do for sure is see calendar push notifications show up on my Epix Gen 2 before an event same as I would see a new email notification show up from my Gmail account, or a text notification. What I cannot do is see an event (such as a work-related meeting) that is recorded in my Google Calendar also appear in my Garmin Calendar widget when I use it on my Epix Gen 2. All I see in my Garmin Calendar widget are my upcoming workouts (which is as expected) and national holidays, which I believe appear by default.

  • So, what  refers to is the following:

    1. Depending on the smartphone you own, it has its own "native" calendar application. For example, Samsung has its own calendar app. iPhones, I believe, have iCal. The Google Pixel phone will have the Google Calendar app.
    2. In any case, each of these native smartphone apps (Samsung Calendar, iCal, or Google Calendar in the Pixel) gives you the ability to "link" a third-party app to it, so that you can get those notifications in your smartphone.
    3. Usually, this means that you go to your smartphone's calendar app settings and add another email account (e.g., for Samsung, go to the calendar app menu, click on "manage calendars", click on the "+" sign and proceed to "add account").
    4. In my case, with a Samsung phone, I went to the Samsung calendar app and made sure I added my Google Account information so that my Google Calendar events appear in my Samsung's calendar app. This is important because, as @lindajm22 pointed out, your Garmin watch is going to look at our smartphone's native calendar app for any events to include in the Garmin Calendar widget in the watch (in this case, the Epix Gen 2).
    5. So, you are not actually looking for a "link". Instead, you are linking your third-party calendar app (Google Calendar, perhaps) to your smartphone's native calendar. Your Garmin Epix Gen 2 will then be able to see - and display - your third-party calendar events in the calendar widget by looking for those events in your smartphone calendar app.

    I hope this helps.

  • So how does the native calendar sync to Garmin connect and Epix, because that's not happening.

  • It has nothing to do with Garmin Connect.  That is not the calendar that this uses.  This is setting up the native calendar on your phone.  That is the calendar that the watch is looking for.  Your watch has to be connected to your phone to pull the events from the phone calendar.

  • OK why doesn't my native calendar on my phone sync/link/connect with my watch. Google calendar is my native calendar but nothing is showing in Epix and vice versa. Also should the content in Garmin connect calendar show up on my Epix watch?

  • I don't have a Pixel phone so I can only help so much with that, but have you accepted all permissions in Garmin Connect?  That is the only thing you need to do in the app to make this work.  Accept all permissions.  Other than that, I don't know anything about which calendar is the native calendar on a Pixel.

  • Yes Google calendar is the native calendar and yes to all permission!

  • I also wish I had experience using a Google smartphone (i.e., Pixel) to help you more effectively. I have only used iPhone (up to three years ago) and - thereafter - I've used Samsung exclusively.

If, in your Pixel settings, you have given Connect email permissions, it should be reading your native email, which would be, in your case, Google Calendar. If it does not, that is strange to me. One thing I did discover is that if I have battery saver turned on in my smartphone, calendar events are not sent to my Garmin watch with the same frequency as when my smartphone's battery saver is turned off. I am sorry I cannot be of more help.

  • Just to be clear, I am not talking about the permissions in the phone settings.  I am talking about the permissions in the Garmin Connect app. Also, make sure your phone is connected by bluetooth to your watch.  You won't see any events in the widget when your phone is disconnected.

I don't know what else to suggest, sorry.  Maybe Garmin could help if you called them.

  • I get all other notifications from my phone just nothing from my calendar

  • Since it all runs under Google software ecosystem, you definitely can find a third-party app that does it. But the result might be as basic as this printable calendar https://www.123calendars.com/blank-calendar.html.
