Venu not showing my correct 5k record

Hi all - As you can see from the attached. I recently did a 5k run. The cumulative time for achieving 5k was 30:16, however i actually stopped the activity at 5.06 KM and the time for that was 30:37. When I was given a new 5k record the time given was 30:37, but actually am i correct in thinking the record for 5km should be 30:16?? Apologies if I’m missing something obvious here!!

  • Did you stop during the run? For the same 21 seconds?

  • Hi,

No, I didn’t stop at all in the run.

  • I had the same issue for one of my PRs and it took me a while of looking around online to find an answer.  Basically, Garmin Connect counts the total time when the distance is close to one of the PR distances.  It does this because if you had been running a 5K race you would want your time to reflect how long it took you to finish the course (as represented by when you stopped your watch timer) and not how long it took for the GPS to say you had passed 5 kilometers.  Usually in a race the distance you run will not be exactly 5 kilometers but will be a little bit longer and you wouldn't want your watch to stop timing you before you crossed the finish line.

However, although I couldn't find confirmation of this from the Garmin support page, if you run a distance that is sufficiently longer than 5K your Venu will automatically record a PR for the fastest 5 kilometers of your run.  This is how it worked for me with my half marathon PR.  My Venu recorded it during a 14 mile run.  I don't know how much longer you would have had to run for your Venu to have recorded exactly your 5K time as the PR.

I think you should be able to edit your current 5K PR by trimming the activity to remove those last few seconds and then setting it manually as your PR.

Here's a link to Garmin's support page addressing the issue, which isn't particularly clear, at least to me.  https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=GePPQ3FJYO0A8TAHLeC7CA

  • Thanks. That makes sense now you explained it but not obvious to me until then!

I solved the issue by beating that personal best, as part of the ‘5k race’ at the end of the training plan which recorded it exactly.

  • Great, congratulations on the new PR!

  • Weird!
I had the same issue for the 1 KM PR which was for reasons unknown set to a slower time than the recorded activity which held the correct 1 km record time. Eventually I ended up adding a manual activity with the same date and a distance of 1 KM as well as the correct time. Then I selected this activity event and marked it as "set as personal record" in the Garmin Connect webinterface.
