Scale not registering - Body Fat %, Water %, Muscle Mass & Bone Mass

I've just bought the Index Scale, which by some stroke of luck unlike some others I had no problem linking to my Connect account.

The problem I am having is that the scale is not registering any of the metrics for Body Fat %, Water %, Muscle Mass & Bone Mass. Regardless of where I stand on the scale all I am getting is the Weight & BMI

The Weight & BMI is being uploaded to Connect, however the other metrics don't appear there either.

Although I don't believe it's a Garmin Connect issue, I've tried numerous resets & reconnects using both WPS & GCM set-ups without success in getting the additional metrics.

The scale is running F\W 2.50.0.0, although it was running 2.40.0.0 when I first got it and had some difficulty in getting the F/W to update, but got there in the end.

Is anyone else having issues where the above metrics are not being recorded?
  • at Garmin website it shows 2.60 as the latest version and it does not solve this problem.

Index Smart Scale software version 2.60

  • Garmin support reply to me suggesting the information for my son would be incorrectly inserted in garmin connect.
I re-enter all information but the problem still the same. it does not get any measure but weight and BMI.

for me it now gives me my body fat at 2.4%, I strongly believe this is not correct ;)
hope they can fix it soon.
  • Well I guess Garmin has given up on his problem...

Just had a real test done today and my bodyfat percentage is 11.2% but the scale cannot measure it unless I pass 19 in BMI. When I do, it says my bodyfat percentage is 1.6%.
So clearly is just an algorithm doing a calculation (and doing it wrong).

Come on Garmin, this is a joke. Make an athlete mode so it works for the really thin people as well.
If not, then give us the option to return it :-)
  • I spend sometime changing my son's account data (height) and testing the scale.
wasn't before we got to his bmi to 25 (changing his height in garmin account) that the scale start working for him.
so we start changing it back to his actual height, it stopped again. so we changed it until we got close enough to his actual size but getting a bmi of 20. (everything "working"). we finally (with a lot of patience) changed it back to his actual height and somehow the scale kept his bmi on 20, so it's working for now.
but his body fat is 2.8% as well, which is also wrong.

    Similar problems for me.

My scale registers the metrics on Garmin connect, but by the next day they have randomly disappeared. Take today, I've just checked that today's metrics are all in Garmin Connect, but now yesterday just has the weight. I have no metrics anymore for any of the last week apart from today. Great work again Garmin.

I now just accept this is another of a long list of totally unfit for purpose Garmin products I have brought and will most likely never work as advertised. I only purchased as they were making my trusty Tanita BC1000 so difficult to use, my 910XT having died and my Edge 1000 needing physically plugging into the computer to get the weight data off (plus you have to drill down through about 7 settings and menu pages to even select weight scale as a manually added sensor each time.)

So Garmin my recent purchases from you:

910 XT - Worked great, Ant+ transfers ropey as hell, but unit reliable.
    Fenix 1 - actually worked!
Fenix 2 (2 replacements, none ever worked reliably) - should never have been sold, faulty product IMO.
Fenix 3 - sort of works, only the GPS is technically compromised so ridiculously inaccurate, should not have been sold as is. Also randomly killed Concept 2 rower support.
Edge 1000 - works now after many huge firmware updates, woeful battery life.
Bike Radar - works, but I think Garmin just brought the tech from another firm, so not sure this counts.
Vivosmart HR - complete rubbish, only function that works is the step counter, should never have been sold, faulty product.
Index Smart scale - complete rubbish, does not work and should never have been released for sale.

So would I recommend any of my friends/family/work colleagues buy Garmin? Of course not! 3 out of 8 purchases have to be binned or returned for refund, 1 now works over a year later, 1 works with the exception of the GPS (primary function!) being the worse I've ever used, and 2 were ok.

I really want the Varia HUD, one look at the forum and I decided to not even look at it, it won't work and is pretty expensive to go in the Garmin drawer of shame.

My only advise to others with issues is don't for a second think Garmin care that the Index Scale doesn't work, or that they even can fix it. They'll just release a new version that won't work either!

This! Just posted a rant in a different thread, but it sums up my feelings about Garmin. As much as Garmin likes to tout new hardware, their software site is horrible. And you can bet the FitBits and Pebbles of the world will get better at hardware faster than Garmin can get better at software. :D
  • Just to keep updated...
I have a ticket in Garmin where they asked me a bunch of questions and information.

anyway, no solution so far and they just said they are looking into a solution.

the issue for me now it's "personal" as I lost some weight in the last few weeks so my BMI is 19.4 and after it drops from 20 (which was my average) it stop calculation all compositions....

I have a similar issue, and from my point a view is not a smart scale problem. Problem resides on garmin connect.

How I came to this conclusion:

    - During weigting scale displays all metrics.
    - After weighting went to GC Mobile, refreshed data: data is there.
    - Going to GC website on PC: data is gone (only weight and BMI is there)
    - returning to GC mobile: data gone

Conclusion: problem resides on Garmin connect.

    Buy something else

If you just bought it your best bet is to get the money back, the item has a worthless software, horrible, get your money back and buy something else. Garmin is not fast fixing issues.
