Any chance OHR on 935 ?

Forerunner 945 Beta 2.64 is now available

Changes made from version 2.50 to 2.64:

  • Added ability to enable wrist-based heart rate for swimming (pool and open water). To enable this feature: 1. Open Menu 2. Scroll to 'Wrist Heart Rate' and enter menu 3. Scroll to 'While Swimming' and toggle to 'On'
  • Note that there are inherent limitations with the technology that may cause some of the heart rate readings to be inaccurate under certain circumstances.   These circumstances include the user’s physical characteristics, the fit of the device, and the type and intensity of the swimming.  For the most accurate heart rate during swimming, Garmin recommends using HRM-Swim or HRM-Tri heart rate monitors.

Any chance new firmware also for 935 or the 935 is officially dead ?

  • I doubt it will come to the 935. The FR945 has a different OHR Sensor and enabling OHR for swimming will trigger some people to move from  the 935 to a 945. As a side effect that would generate additional cash for Garmin.

I am a big fan of OHR. While (for me) it works great for cycling and okay for running it is a total fail in water. Sometimes i use a Mio Link for Open Water swimming at the same wrist as my 935. This works quite well. Why? If the Mio Link is tightened to my wrist, there is no chance of water getting between the skin and the OHR Sensor. With the design of the 935 / 945 you will always get some water to the sensor window. This will mess up the reading. Unreliable Heart rate does not have any value for me.

Considering that every firmware update breaks working features i am not in favor of future updates.

  • There are still plenty of folks using their flagship Fenix series that will feel very downplayed unless Garmin enable this feature for their gadgets. FR935 is identical in the SW sense with Fenix 5  line so there might be a chance to have OHR enabled in SW/FW during swim activities.

It really should take more than comment out that IF... line from SW/FW where it checks activity type. Of course, they might want/need to add some big scary banner about WHR (in)accuracy submerged in the water due legal/commercial reasons.

  • Very very much doubt we will see this on the 935. The new 945 has a different sensor, and on top of that, Garmin will be looking for more ways to differentiate their products.

Why ? They bought a device that did what it said (mainly, bugs aside!!). Those buying a new watch get new features - Garmin cannot back-port new features to all old watches, especially after hardware changes. Owners of older watches sometimes get new features, but they should be seen as a bonus and not something to rely on.

If Garmin has no intention, it sure would be nice if they could come out and say it.White sun small cloud

  • Because of WatchOS and WearOS. Those are far more open ecosystems where you can add features (apps) afterwards. And people are used to be able to update SW of their gadgets like phones. Especially Apple ecosystem is all about longevity, to keep it relevant by adding new SW features (iOS15/16/17/18...) to justify your spending. If not now but in a future Garmin just must up their game to be able to compete with these platforms, heck Garmin is after or exeeding Apple pricing and has same time builtin irrelevance mechanism to abandon (in featurewise) their products after about one year.
