935 Won't Sync Workouts with Garmin Connect (Web/App) or Garmin Express

I used to not have an issue syncing workouts and using them with my watch so this isn't a newbie issue :) I'm not exactly sure when it started, but it has been around a month now (so version 7.0/7.1 on the 935). I was hoping an update would fix it, but have had no luck.

For Garmin app, I'm using the Google Pixel 2 XL so Android (the app has an issue that before it wouldn't have a check mark on the workout that isn't synced, but mine all show check marks and then lights up when I hit the check mark again and then it goes through, but it doesn't sync to the watch).

But I've also tried using the web based Garmin Connect with Garmin Express from a PC (GE updated today and it didn't work before or after). I know I've seen others report success with that but I've not been able to replicate.
  • I had recently the following case. 2 swim workouts with the swim HRM, both were successfully saved on the watch, but not synced onto the GCM. I tried afterwards on the Pc with garmin express. the sync was unsuccessful since I got an error indication "Invalid FIT file". hence something were wrong with the saving of the workouts on the watch. I deleted manually the FIT file in the ACTIVITY folder of the watch (windows explorer), and then the sync with the garmin express was resumed successfully. However I lost the FIT file and the workout.
I don't think this has to do with capacity on teh watch, but something goes wrong with the saving of the workout. And both of them were swim workouts with the swim HRM.
    Any similar experiences?
    thanks
PS: both cases appeared with different FW, the latest with the 7.10

I have had some similar experience with my Forerunner 935 and also in the past with a 920xt. As it was always happening during swimming sessions with the swim HRM, I thought the problem is in the HR data upload after the swim...
  • This is a FAQ I found about reasons for corrupted files, from an older post (https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/garmin-connect/31157-how-to-repair-a-fit-file). In my both fault cases, the ACTIVITY folder in my watch had indeed many old files. I would suggest to delete regularly old activities stored in the watch before they get too many (off course sync before to GC).

What are possible reasons for corrupted fit files? How can data
    corruption be avoided?
    Answer:
I know that I have only a very limited knowledge about reasons for data corruption. In some cases
files get corrupted because the battery became empty during the recording process.
In other cases it seems that a file reorganization went wrong and some records don’t appear in their
chronological order and cause corrupted data therefore.
Some hints to minimize the risk of data corruption:
    · Regularly check for firmware updates
    · Keep the number of files in your activity folder on the device’s file system down. If you delete
the files in your activity folder with a Mac computer then empty the trash folder before you
unplug your device from the computer.
  • Garmin should be ashamed for this.. such a basic functionality that they can't manage to keep working. I'm a the office trying to quickly input my interval run on my phone thinking to do a quick sync to my watch as I always did. (There's only 4 workouts on the watch). No cable with me to try GC web...

Trying to use the built in interval editor on my FR935 watch directly. Should work for this simple interval but nevertheless.. WTF.. :-(
  • I was able to get my workouts going again. I had emailed Garmin and they recommended removing my old workouts. I also cleared my activities (and I had a lot going back a few months) as Konstatinos recommended and now workouts sync with Garmin Express. So at least now I can add my workouts unlike before. Hopefully they get Sync fixed on mobile as using a PC is painful...
  • A friend of mine had this same problem. I recommend master reset in the watch and re-installing the connect app in the mobile phone. This solved her issues of connect not syncing activities with Forerunner 935.

Method 3 - "Master Reset" - from Garmin Support Chat
    • Power off watch (press and hold Light, Yes on prompt)
    • Press and hold Start/Stop and Lap/Reset.
    • Press and hold Light (three buttons should now be pressed in)
    • After first beep, release Start/Stop.
    • After second beep, release Lap/Reset.
    • Release Light.
Remember to clean up activities in the watch often to reduce chance of facing this issue.

    Thanks!
