The Running Power Connect IQ Apps are now available!

Current Compatible Devices:
  • Forerunner 935
  • fenix 5 series
  • fenix Chronos
Connect IQ data fields:
  • Current Running Power
  • Current Lap Running Power
  • Last Lap Running Power
  • Average Running Power
  • Combo Running Power
We have also published a series of FAQ. They can be found here.
  • are you sure your splits in the top match laps in the bottom? Is the bottom excel generated directly from fit file data or some other data? There is not enough info to check this out really. Perhaps you can post a link to the activity on Garmin Connect

Yes - I loaded the file to Golden Cheetah and exported the raw values.

Today I decided to try the Combo Running Power data field by GarminLabs. I'm not familiar with running power and I don't know how to interpret the numbers. I went on a little run and my average watts was 314. Is this a poor or good score? How do I use this number in the future for training purposes? Do I need to input this data elsewhere for it to be any benefit to me? Any info you can provide this newbie would be appreciated.
  • Any of the numbers these devices are personal to you. To put this result in perspective, you need to do a number of runs at different intensities and see how they fall. That way, you'll get to know what is good or poor for you. Avoid falling into the trap of trying to judge your numbers against others, unless you are competing against them.

You just finished a 85km ultra and took the time to reply to me? Impressive Phil. No, I'm not competing against anyone other than myself. There's no chart or table that says 314 lies here? It's all an individual thing?
  • Running power is so new there's little published research concerning its meaning and interpretation. We can use our knowledge derived from cycling power. However, there are many 'best guesses' involved in the computation of a running power metric. There's a chap called Andrew Coggan who’s done a lot of work on cycling power now turning his attention to running power. He has been working with Stryd, but the basic principles for developing running are much the same. Then again, I use pace for my training. It follows that if you improve pace you should improve power since, in it's simplest form Power = force x velocity.

You'll see in other posts in this thread discussions about the numbers that those using Stryd pods differ from those using Garmin. These differences are similar to what cyclists get using different power meters too. Hence my suggestion that you get a feel of what the numbers mean for you.

As for replying after the 85km ultra? Can't move the legs LOL! Hands still work though. :-)
  • The general idea is that power provides a way of monitoring even effort which is usually the best way to run a race. If your power in say a 5K or 10K race average x power how well did you think you paced it? Pace might drop off if the end of the race was uphill but you might have actually have been working harder than the rest of the race etc etc

The next time you might be able to run at say x + 10 power on average but because you maintained a better even effort you could end up with a faster time without being any fitter.

All good in theory, I have yet to really try and do this myself ! Perhaps I should as even after 35 years of running I still usually go off too quick !
  • Yay! APAC support, finally able to install the app. Thanks Garmin !

Awesome, took them only three months...

Could somebody take a look at his graph of the power on my most recent run and tell me if it looks normal. All my runs seem to start of with about 5 minutes reasonably steady, then it just seems to be all over the place.

  • Can't tell much from the power graph alone. Either a link to the activity itself or a screenshot with pace and elevation overlaid on the power plot would be more helpful.
