The Running Power Connect IQ Apps are now available!

Current Compatible Devices:
  • Forerunner 935
  • fenix 5 series
  • fenix Chronos
Connect IQ data fields:
  • Current Running Power
  • Current Lap Running Power
  • Last Lap Running Power
  • Average Running Power
  • Combo Running Power
We have also published a series of FAQ. They can be found here.
  • Actually 275W does seem very low. I was only at that on the treadmill last night for first minute when was barely at 10 kph. Last outdoor run I was not under 300W at all and did fly out of the gates there either although quicker than 10 kph. Of course might be weight related. 73 kg plugged in at present.
  • Worth keeping in mind that there is no air resistance or wind when running on a treadmill, as discussed here: https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/ui47l4JBq92hHkaJfJcan5
  • Good point, so about 3%

Talking about wind resistance I did a hard session on the track today running 1K laps with some mean wind and unfortunately I had only activated one Power DF with "no wind". I'd found previously that using "wind" seemed to overly exaggerate its impact but it would have been interesting to see it today as I struggled not to slow down too much on the segments facing the wind. Still, the power graph is more "legible" than the "pace" graph with larger variations, 380 and 480 watts vs 4'10/km and 3'50/km (footpod being a tad undercalibrated), possibly showing that my body couldn't work as hard with the wind...although you'd think that it would actually be working harder to overcome it...

A new version of the running power apps is available in the Connect IQ store.

Changes made from version 1.00 to 1.10:

    - Support for the Forerunner 645 and Forerunner 645 Music
    - Support for display of power on 3rd party websites
    - Fixed an issue if the running dynamics source drops out mid-run

  • It'll be interesting to see which 3rd party sites avail themselves of the ability to show power values, and how soon it's implemented.
  • Actuall I wonder what that "- Support for display of power on 3rd party websites" means.
The power data was already in the .fit file for anyone to use and sites like the excellent runalyze.com read the data just fine.

I have a FR935 but when I try to search and download any of the listed Running Power apps/data fields, I receive a "This app is not compatible with the selected device." error.

My FR935 was purchased in China and is updated to version 6.0. Please advise.

So far my experience with GRP is that uphill it's about similar to Stryd vs avg effort. Downhill seems to underestimate a bit more, similar to what Stryd did in earlier firmwares. This might mean your HR creeps up if you try to match your avg power downhill.

On quick pace changes GRP actually seems a bit faster to react (but by just a bit), at least when using Stryd as speed source. Not sure why since speed source is same, perhaps they have some extra tricks to make the IQ field more responsive. Both still suffer from noticeable lag when grade changes quickly, probably due altimeter based grade calculation. So you'll see your uphill power after running some 10 secs uphill, which makes it sometimes difficult to relate RPE vs power when the terrain is undulating. This is a technical limitation so probably not much can be done to it at the moment, but good to keep in mind.

Running Power requires Connect IQ 4.2, which became available with 935 firmware version 7.00. As your watch was purchased in China, I assume it is an APAC version - APAC software updates are typically 6-8 weeks after RoW watches. 7.00 I think was released around 5 Dec 2017, so hopefully it will become available for APAC watches very soon.

As you are still running CIQ 4.1.x, that is why it is coming up incompatible.
  • No Running Power registered after update to version 7.60
