Best Way to Track Pace Targets

I have a race coming up where my pace range will be very high, down to 25 min/mile in some sections and up to 7 min / mile in some sections and I am wondering the bast way to track my pace against my target paces for the various sections of the course. Any good ideas on this?
  • Sounds like a course when the original purpose of the courses functionality - to provide "real time" pacing and not just navigation would come into play.

    In a similar vein I did a long (6 miles) uphill Strava segment on the bike the other day but with no power meter as on a hired bike although did have HR and cadence. I used the ahead/behind to "pace" me early on when the gradients were less steep to try and leave something in the tank for the "ramp" at the end.

    Is it one you can "make" a course from a previous run or "borrow" somebody's else's of similar standard to you? Or is there a Strava segment to do similar? Would only be slightly cautious of a long Strava segment "off road" as any GPS "quirk" in the original trace or your run would see you "off segment" whereas a course does not "give up" if you slip off the course slightly.
  • I don't remember exactly how it appears on the watch, but when I was pacing my friend for a half I set up a workout in garmin connect and used that for the different pace segments. If it's something you can measure (8m/mile for 5 miles, then 20m/mile for 2 miles, or whatever) out in distance or time I'd give that a shot and it should show you the pacing on the watch.

    I do not have access to someone who has run the course with times I would try to meet.

    Strava Segments might be an interesting choice, but some would be around 7 - 10k. Will see if I can make that work.

    Setting up a workout was one idea I had thought about, just was not sure if the Virtual Partner would also follow the workout, or if I then just would refer to the workout screen? Will give this a go today and see how that works as well.
  • If you check the Strava segments you can also get the whole activity.
    Also, perhaps better still, if you do search on GC for activities on previous race days you may find one close to your target time that you can use to create a course from.
  • In looking in to this in more detail I am really surprised there is not a tool available that would allow creating basically a "fake" activity that you could then load and then just Race a Prior Activity. Wonder why no one has developed this, seems like it should not be that difficult.
  • there is one for bikes, not aware for running though...I think you are going to have to do it on feel and "instant" pace??

    Well if it is a race, has it ever been raced before? If so you could pick a previous race of a similiar time to your goal and use that?
  • Yeah, just 3-4 years ago if you googled "hate strava" it used to be really easy to find those digital epo sites. (I would never use one; I was just interested in why some ppl seemed to hate strava so much). I'm guessing strava's twisted some arms to put a stop to that. (The motivation for the "hate strava" site(s) was that they hated the competitive aspect of strava, which they felt was anti-social, so they created a tool to make the competition meaningless. So they said, anyway.)

    This is just an idea (never tried it myself), but could you:
    1) Create a bunch of course segments with something like http://gpsies.com, each with its own average speed/pace.
    2) Merge those segments into a single GPX file with a site like this: http://gotoes.org/strava/

    Or even better,
    1) find an app/online service to split an existing GPX file into the segments you want.
    2) Use another app/service to edit/set the average pace for each one.
    3) Combine them back into a single file

    All of those should be possible in theory. RouteCourse will set/change the average speed of whatever course you're importing to a fixed speed that you set in the website. Unfortunately I think it only does that when it sends the course to your device. You'd have to hook up your device to USB and get the files off manually.
  • Looks like Digital EPO has been taken down. Bit of an unfortunate name as I recall I was trying to construct something to import to Strava so could create some "good" segments from a "good" trace that I had "drawn" in some mapping tool. I also recall trying to create an "activity" from a marathon some years ago where I had mile splits (manually taken an mile markers) and HR data. So, for me, it was a "tool" and not something to use for "cheating". Why you would use it for that beyond me.

    So, bit like a course, I needed to construct some time info but had only GPS data from the track had created.

    The problem with setting the average speed of a course is even pace will be useless if one minute if maybe "walking" (or rather clampering)
