Forerunner 935 GPS Accuracy/Performance

Let' get it started. Post your GPS results and comparisons.

FR935 vs F5s
FR935 vs FR920
FR935 vs FR23x

Thanks!
  • I've seen mention that one sec recording improves GPS performance, does this still count true for current watches like the 935? I've always left my garmin devices on smart recording and not seen any issues...

Depends on what you consider GPS performance. The stats should all be identical like distance and pace regardless of smart vs every second. The GPS is still working the same, taking the same number of samples to compute distance. The track as drawn may ever so slightly cut corners with smart. The only place the stats might be slightly off (and really only slightly) is with apps like Strava that recomputes the stats from the recorded GPS track.
  • I have paired the H7 to the 935, but as per the bluetooth connectivity thread, there are issues with the Garmin holding that connection solidly

I agree 100% re the repeatability aspect.

So far the 935 has pretty consistently been a little short. What I have also noticed is that the pace track on the 935 will become more erratic about half way through my runs, which to me kind of implies it is somehow losing the GPS lock a little bit. I find that a little odd in that usually my GPS watches may have more trouble in the very beginning but then get a better lock as time goes on.

Well I'm on the others side, I have H7 paired with 935 the connection is stable, but the drop outs are frustrating especially when I'm on downhill with easy pace don't now whats the reason...

After making 100% sure that all iPhone apps that connect to the H7 are unpaired from it, my connection seems stable now.

H10 on the way today so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Probably the last comparison I'll post for the 935 vs. V800

This was an interval run, 935 using GPS+GLONASS, 1sec, footpod set to off for both pace and distance.

I was overall very happy with the GPS for this run.

Here is a sampling of the tracks, where the 935 is in blue. You can see that it remains shifted over from my actual path on some portions of the run. That has been a consistent finding over all my runs with the 935.

Here are the pace tracks, which I think match up very well:

Once again, 935 was a little short of the V800 in total distance (about 0.04 miles), which has also been a consistent finding for me. Hard to know the truly accurate number, but I favor the V800 because it more closely matches my running path.

Next thing I'm going to try is using the Stryd sensor for pace and distance.

Overall really liking the 935, and for me the GPS performance has been more than adequate, although perhaps could be improved even more. No regrets about returning my F5.
  • Does someone have a Fenix 3 and a 935 to do a side by side comparison? I know the 935 will be better with the wobble but i would like to see the difference.:)

    Hi,

    after a 5K run today:

I see different tracks and running across buildings, and I was using exactly the same sidewalk in the 2-ways.
    I was using GPS-only (default).
    Any advice? Is this abnormal?
I need to move to GPS+Glonass? (this was a city run, not forest or places where GPS signal is low)

Just cuz we were connected at some point I dusted off the F3 to compare it. I've never seen a device nail parts of this course perfectly, but the 935 did okay. This is by far the worst F3 track I've seen. It might be due to it's long time off, but the pacing was consistently faster then the 935 and consistently wrong.

The GPS files can be viewed here: http://www.mygpsfiles.com/app/#XhfigVg6

Here's a break down of the interval pacing. The workout was stupendous if I believed the F3. It was the 1st warm run and the perceived effort and pacing on the 935 were much closer.

  • Guess the wriggly line of the Fenix3 results in increased distances (which leads to faster pace). While the overall distance seems to get corrected for in garmin connect (wondering about the garmin connect tracks btw ;) ) it does lead to incorrect (instant or lap) pace

As seen on the mygps file the actual distance based on gps track is 1km longer for the F3.

And those wriggly lines is also what I saw on the Fenix5, also the reason to return it. Hope to finally receive my 935 next week.
  • huh... olu! What a difference between F3 and 935!! I've almost forgotten the F3 performance!

Here a comparision between F5 and 935. F5 not so much wobble as your track but canno't deny the heritage of the F3...

    @all:
As the 935 should be nearly identical hardware as F5, do you notice that the charging connector is on the different side as the F5? On the F5 it's under the "3" of the watch face and on the 935 it's under the "9". Maybe there are more hardware differences as we think about?
