Upgrading to fenix 5/5S

Curious if any 735XT owners are considering upgrading to the fenix 5/5S. I tried a fenix 3HR prior to the 735XT, but found it too large for daily wear. From the photos I'm seeing, it seems like the 5 – and especially the 5S – are a nice size reduction in the fenix.
  • Except that the display is actually smaller (30,5 diameter for the fenix 5 vs 31,1 for the 735xt), it's sharper though. The watch itself is indeed bigger (and heavier). Not that I think that 88g (fenix 5) vs 44g (735xt) is anything worthwhile mentioning. But mainly, thicker... 11,9 vs 15,5mm.

But all in all it just seems like a more luxurious 735xt, from what I understand it uses the same kind of display (so nothing brighter or things like that), I do like that the screen is actually round but yeah. I don't think the differences are that big, unless performance wise.

I do find the 735xt way more responsive then the 235 I had before for example. So if the user experience improves a lot, who knows.
  • you're right I missed that the 735 has a 0.02" bigger screen! Still I think the 240x240 display (vs. 215x180 I think) will make quite a difference.

  • If they decide to add more features on a 735xt formfactor (or smaller/lighter) and call it 835 or whatnot, yes I would consider it.

Hold your pants on. Rumour has it that 935 is imminent...

So basically you could wear 2 735s and still be no lighter than one Fenix 5...

Yeah, resolution can indeed make quite a difference. The display on the 735xt just looks quite cheap imo, partly due to resolution but also backlighting, clarity/brightness. Dunno.

Overall ok-ish for my use btw, but as I use it as my regular watch nowadays I'd love a better display.

    *Edit*

All that being said, I can't help it but I'm starting to get an itch for the Fenix5... Damnit.

Stainless steel bezels and sapphire glass screens for robustness, perhaps?

Brotect screen protector resolves your second point...
  • also you have variable back-light brightness which would be useful as well. We really shouldn't be thinking about this too much! ;-)

Heh, sure... but just saying that 44g makes no or at most neglect-able difference performance wise so the only thing would be 'comfort-ability' I guess (not sure if that's even a word) but when you have to put it on tightly I don't think that's a point either.

Anyway, it's all personal just as deciding if it's worth the money is. I regularly buy a new phone, some will call me crazy but for me it's worth it and I'm lucky enough to have the money for it. Same with this watch, if you have the money and decide you want to do it and don't regret it afterwards it's all worth it right? :)

Sure - I just don't expect to go any faster with a Fenix 5! I'm usually with you on new gadgets but resisted the iPhone 7 (over 6S) because just thought the lack of headphone jack would be PITA in the car when want to listen to podcasts and charge same time. That said I do like the air pods for every other time.
  • I've had the 735xt for about 2.5 months, previously had the F3HR for about a year, I find/found the 735xt a bit underwhelming. The best quality/feature was it's size and weight. I had a F2 and F3 so I became accustomed to the F3HR. When I first put on the 735 it was like night and day as far as size goes. It's a great training watch but very disappointing when compared to the daily wear-ability of that of the Fenix. Not to mention some of the limitations when it came to training (e.g. data screens, ability to modify alerts once in an activity, etc).

I just received my Fenix 5 about four days ago. Although it is smaller than the F3HR it's still taking some getting used to the size once again. I can say it's a great looking watch. I've only done one swim thus far but the user experience thus far has been great. It feels quite responsive when navigating through menus/settings.

The only question for me now is whether I should sell my 735 or hold on to it and use both for training.
