Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?

Thank you Tim. Do you get TbT details when navigating back to a saved location? Or does it need to be a saved course in GC exported to the watch? (in which case your proposed 'two courses' solution would seem to be the only way to go)

When navigating to a saved location you simply get a pointer and distance to that location, so no TbT there. For TbT you really need to load a course.

You also get some "turn" info if you do this somewhat simpler process:

Create a course in GC either using the course creator or from a previous activity.
Send it to your 735 from the mobile app.

It then, well for me it did, inserted course points as pseudo turn markers. This means when you start a course you get a distance to the next turn and an arrow of what direction to take. You could of course also see the direction to follow by looking at the map page and using zoom as appropriate.

Hi ! I'm Fabrice, from Tarbes, France. I wish you an happy new year for 2018.
I don't get any turn by turn info when I turn my 735 xt in navigation mode after downloading a course from connect ; only a "map", but no arrow at all... Is there some parameter to change in the settings ?
Thanks a lot for your help, have a nice day.

Guys, not sure the mud is completely clear on how to use the 735 for TBT, so I thought I'd describe my method and give you some pix. You need a Garmin Edge device and a RideWithGPS account. I use an old Garmin Edge 500.
    1) Create a TCX file with turn alerts from RideWithGPS.
    2) Load the file into Garmin Edge New Files folder, remove USB cable, then turn on Edge device. This allows conversion from TCX to FIT.
    3) Copy FIT from Edge Course folder to 735xt NEWFILES folder.

This creates a course that you can navigate with turn by turn directions consisting of leading beeps, vibration, and turn arrows. No street names or data fields with waypoint info are available with the 735xt. Used with an Edge 500 for example during a bike ride, you'll have more than enough information for TBT and ample data displayed.

This is just a condensed version of what could be a very long winded explanation of how to setup the 735xt for turn by turn navigation.

I don’t think it needs to be as complicated as that anymore.

Create a course (using whatever app or course creator you like; I use Footpath on the iPhone) or download an existing activity (yours or someone else’s). Open the file on your phone (the “Open in...” option on the iPhone) and Garmin Connect Mobile will be an option. Select that and it will import as a course Then send it to your watch in the normal way and you’ll have your course plus turn-by-turn directions.

DCR recently had a post on this GCM update I believe. It’s pretty trivial now.

Sounds good. Doesn't work for me yet with GCM android. Must be doing something wrong.

@darren: Yes, although I haven't thoroughly tested, you pointed me in the right direction for a wire free way to to this. On Garmin Connect website, import the TCX using Training/Courses/Import. Rename and save, then go to Garmin Connect Mobile. Sync should occur automatically provided you have data connection. Find new file under Courses, and send to 735xt or other device. This is a bit easier, though you do need good BLE connection. Thanks it works.
  • Maybe you know this but a neat option is to press and hold the up button while navigating. Then you can zoom to a more suitable resolution

Excellent tip, Easthim. Thank you. On my device, long press brings up a submenu with Music Controls as default. Scrolled down to locate Zoom option. Works great for short distance circuits like the test images posted above.
