Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?

I would love to know that too. Can someone also show some navigation screen pictures?
  • Here is how I am hoping it might work (as it does on 920XT and fenix 3):

    Process:
-Create a route on http://ridewithgps.com/ with waypoints for directions
-Export course as a TCX file
-Drop Course.TCX file into Edge “New Files” folder
-Allow Edge to convert Course.TCX file to Course.FIT file
-Drop new Course.FIT file into the 735XT “New Files” folder

A better work around is to use MCBadgers TCX --> FIT Program for this at this link - https://www.dropbox.com/s/4fdzqmzgzum6tvr/CourseTCX2FITRC1.zip?dl=0 (Not sure this is most recent version, hopefully MC is around and can comment)

Once you have the FIT file on the 735 you should be able to choose Navigation and choose the course and then choose an activity and you will get turn by turn directions based on the waypoints created in the above process.

I have tested this on the fenix 3 and it works well. Hoping the same for the 735, as this with Varia Vision would be awesome.
  • You also get some "turn" info if you do this somewhat simpler process:

Create a course in GC either using the course creator or from a previous activity.
Send it to your 735 from the mobile app.

It then, well for me it did, inserted course points as pseudo turn markers. This means when you start a course you get a distance to the next turn and an arrow of what direction to take. You could of course also see the direction to follow by looking at the map page and using zoom as appropriate.
  • That's interesting. On the fenix 3 (at least the last time I tried it) all you get is bread crumb map and direction "bug" on other screens to follow and no turn direction indications.

The link is good: my preferred options are Windows , Mac and 32-bit Linux, just because the bitly link lets me keep track of roughly how many people are using each version. The name is misleading, the release is 1.02; I decided to keep the link consistent, which requires the name to be the same, because the links are in forums all over the place and I don't want them dead.

That said, if Garmin have discreetly added TBT to the course creator on Connect, as Tim says, much of the need is gone.
  • On the map page (assuming you are in the process of zooming) you get the breadcrumb map (obviously) and a distance to the next turn at the top with an indicator marker of which direction the next turn is.

When you get near the turn, it pops up with a display of distance to turn and a marker which disappears when you are through the turn. Can't remember if you need to on the map page for this to happen or not.

Anyway, I found it quite handy on a loop running course as much to break down a longer run into sections than "real" navigation although was a handy fallback as was not totally familiar with my route.

How it decided what it thought was a turn was automatic and I could see anyway to "edit" the turns in GC and/or the app.

You can see these course points if you import the course into GTC. In theory you can edit them there and send it to the back to the 735. However as GTC is long since obsolete I don't think it is necessarily interpreting the course schema exactly as the 735 is and I fear sending back to the 735 from there with course points may not work exactly as intended. I had a few such problems when tried with a 920 a while back but TBH not tried on a 735 yet. What I could do "wirelessly" in GC and with the app was good enough for my purpose that time.
  • This is great news, I will try on my fenix 3 today to see if it works for me. I created a course and tried to load into GTC but it would not load, I got an error, but I did load it into Basecamp, but there were no waypoints shown, just typical data. Wonder if this is in 735 firmware some how. Anyway will see if I get navigation ques on the f3 later today when I get a chance.

Thanks, did not even realize there was a OSX version. Have been running it in VirtualBox.

OK tried this on the fenix 3 today and it did not work, just normal course navigation, not turn by turn. Look forward to trying it on the 735 when I get mine later today.
  • Be interesting to see where this is being done then. Either by:
GC (perhaps depending on target device)
Mobile app (perhaps depending on target device)
    The device

I wonder then if the FIT on the Fenix 3 is the same as on the 735.

I had course points working on a 920 from either GTC or McBadger's tool but don't recall what I am talking about here working on a 920.
