Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?

    works now!

Looks like if I was not near the start point it would not track my location. So I would not know if I were actually close to the start or not.

Works well enough once I got it going on some shorter runs.

I would love to have a PAN up / down mode! not only a zoom.

Just plotted a 20 mile run and using a 'course' to navigate, it would not zoom in to the my current location - only the zoomed in/out based on the entire route.

    Am I missing something?

I ended up using the APP https://dynamic.watch instead.

    Thanks!

Yes! I tried strava to gpx, file conversion, plugin garmin, copy file to folder.... and what a pain.

Garmin Connect works just fine! Plus I think they have a return "return to start" option! Great for out and backs.

I wish Garmin would take some hints from Strava. Garmin Connects UI, UX, social and segment functionality is on the weak side. I find myself being totally happy with Garmin connect though for stats I want to review after a workout.

Hi Tim, sorry for the confusion. I meant Strava route export, meaning route with no speed information. My understanding is that some tools allow you to "inject" speed information to GPX tracks that come "speedless" from lets say Strava Route Export.

It has been a few days since I used turn by turn navigation, but when I stopped my session today I had the option to "Stop navigation" in the menu (After Save and Discard). What is that? Or is it because I screen with Map on?
  • Map Zoom and turn by turn with 735?

I figured out how to load a course (via course.FIT file from my 520) into the Forerunner 735. But... can the map be zoomed? it seems to default to an aut zoom level even after slecting a higher zoom setting when actually slecting "Do Course"? and what about turn by turn? do they appear ever? only if route came from Garmin Connect native creation? Not at all?

Zoom yes - on the map page - hold down the up arrow until the menu appears and Zoom should be one of the options.

You only get the turn instructions if you send a course from GC to the 735 and/or if you manually upload one with that info in it already. Sounds like the one from the 520 does not have this.
  • followup 735 map zoom question

On the Map page I can zoom easily...its obvious and clearly indicated that the up and down arrows zoom the map. However when you "Do Course" the map zoom selection doesn;t seem to carry forward to be used while doing the course. Am I missing something? Zooming the map is of little value when not riding the course. I want to zoom to see turns while riding. My course file came from ride with gps - then to my 520 to convert a tcx into a course.fit file, and finally placed into new files on the 735. Could ny zoom limiatations be related to leaving GC out of the loop?

    thanks

My edge 520 certainly has turn by turn instructions. What I'm trying to learn is what the turn instructions should look like on the 735. are we talking about text stating the street name, or just turn arrows and distance to next turn? I'm getting the turn arrows and distance to turn but no text. I just want to know if its worth the trouble to re-create ALL my routes on Garmin Connect. I cannot see any import capability with Garmin Connect... so retracing all the roads seems to be the only way.... I'll do it if it will result in better map following on the 735.

    thanks

Did you start the timer? Zoom works the same way as I described when you are actually following a course - i.e. selected Do course and then pressed Start.

On the 735, it is just arrows and a distance to the next turn (if you are viewing the map page). It bleeps when you get near a turn and the screen changes to a view with a more obvious distance and arrow which disappears when you have done the turn.

If you are cycling, I would stick with your Edge as must be easier to see the screen. Of course for running or when you only have your 735 with you it is quite handy. For running I found it useful just to know the distance to the next turn and which direction. Obviously at running speeds it is a lot easier to see a turn when you get there anyway.

    Morning/afternoon all,
Resurrecting this thread after a few quiet months; TbT navigation seems to work fairly well when a Garmin course is uploaded via GC/GCM to the 735. Couple of questions around the whole process:
    i) when creating the course in GC, where does Garmin get it's route-building info from? Doesn't seem to be Google. For example, imagine i want to cycle from London's West End to the Aquatics Center..if i 'build' this route in GoogleMaps using the cycle button, i get a particular route (and usually these are pretty good, knowing one-way streets, cycle lanes, etc), but if i build it in GC (with GoogleMaps selected) i get a very different route, which ignores cycle lanes, one-way streets, etc. So....is it possible to use Google's 'cycling routes' directly from them, if Google is selected as the map provider? Or for one-way/cycle lanes, i have to edit them manually myself (using either real knowledge or copying from a GoogleMaps cycling route open in another window) ?
ii) continuing my example, if i want to cycle to the pool, do some lap swimming, and then cycle back, what is the most efficient way to navigate both legs of the journey, on the assumption that the 'way there' is a (slightly) different route to the 'way back' (given central London one-way systems/cycle lanes etc, or just because i fancy taking a different route) ...is it best to have two courses uploaded to the 735 ('out' and 'back') and do each course as a separate ride ? Or have out and back in one course, and for the return leg, just select 'Do Course', start cycling, and rather than get confused, it'll pick up where i am (i.e. halfway through) and i can just follow it from there? Or is there a way of pausing a ride activity while i do a swim, then come back to it to finish off (in which case, a single 'out and back' course?)
    Many thanks for any thoughts.
    John

I think it is as you have found. On GC does not seem to be much choice. I usually build a course based on where roughly I want to go rather it choosing for me.

    ii.
In theory you can join a course at any time, but strange things sometimes happen on circuit or out and back courses where you can, for example, finish a course almost as soon as you start it. In your scenario I would have a different course for the way there and another back for the one back and record the bike rides and the swim as three separate activities.

A more crude solution is just to navigate to a location you have previously saved. Kind of assuming you know roughly where you are going here so some help in just saying the destination is "over there" a few miles may well be enough.
