Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?

Is it just me, or has turn-by-turn navigation been "turned on" in the latest firmware (3.30)?

I am a fairly new user of the Forerunner 735XT - coming from the 920XT. And did my first training with navigation turned on yesterday. I uploaded the course to the watch via the connect Android app - and to my big surprise I got turn by turn navigation!!

See from my post #4 in this thread. This now seems to be a feature of the 735 if you send a course stored in GC to it via the mobile app. Not quite sure if also works if send from Garmin Express but anyway the mobile app is usually more convenient as you can create a course on the GC website and get it to your device all wirelessly.
  • Just an update on my end.

I have now been using the turn-by-turn direction for quite a few runs. Overall I love the feature but unfortunately the lack of GPX import is still pretty limiting. As TIMGROSE suggested, what I do is to open Strava and GC side-by-side and try to replicate the Strava course on GC. Unfortunately, most of the times Garmin doesn't know how to route using the path Strava is suggesting (off road and such) and parts of the course have to be entered by disabling the "follow road" option which makes the course creation for cumbersome and slow.

I really wish Garmin would allow us to import a GPX that is exported by Strava.

Are there any 3rd party tools that would allow us to do that?

Nice the hear you are liking TBT on the 735XT, I'm using TBT on a 305 and 910XT. You want your GPX in Course FIT format, this can be done as follows:

    Import GPX into RideWithGPS.
Add custom cues where you want them.
    Export as TCX.
Convert TCX to FIT with mcbadgers CourseTCX2FIT, you can set average pace here, or JaVaWa RTWtool. RTWtool will let you verify your turns on a Google map.
Copy FIT to the NewFiles folder on the 735XT.
Eject the 735XT and power on.
First load will take a little longer.

Good luck, very keen to hear how it goes, I'm considering a 735XT.
  • @macatarere - Thanks for tip on JaVaWa RTWtool, was not aware of this one and there is a Mac version.

Thanks for the info but I thought that the NewFiles folder import trick doesn't work on 735xt. Can anyone verify that it does?

Also, isn't there any one-step process for doing what you just described? It's pretty much impossible to do using a phone ;-(

I don't have a 735XT yet but it should work if course points from GE are. I'm sure GPX and TCX won't work, they don't on the 910XT.

One step? now that would be nice, Phone? even better! I think the folks at Garminsville prefer it the hard way. A short script could do it ;-)

I'm not holding out any hope of custom course points making it through GC or GCM. They do make it out of GE when the FIT is placed in the OS X NewFiles folder and then sync'd, that's how I get custom cues onto the 910XT without GTC and the ANT+ Agent, quicker too and no misleading messages. I haven't been able to get this method to work with other models but copy and paste is quick and the custom cues in the pasted FIT can be verified on a Google map with RTWtool before ejecting (close RTWtool first if it has a file opened from the Garmin).

Do you use Virtual Racer/Courses? Do they display like the 305/310XT/910XT? Are there any extra pages/data fields displayed?
  • Has anyone tried files processed through my program on the 735? I am hearing that they behave badly on the Edge 510 and FR 920xt. I think I have fixed this, just wondering whether I should be asking one of you good people to do some testing for me before releasing.

Hi McB, just checked, the updated fit you sent me is good on the 910XT, the VP is fine, it doesn't run through to the finish after starting.
  • Great! I feel a release coming on...
