Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?
  • I believe you just create a course of GC and send to device. I'm trying this out on a lunch time ride...

  • Maybe a dump question  How on earth are you using GC to do that. I though GC (web) couldn't do that, which is why I always use RWGPS with cues...

PS - just ordered a 735XT - hope for delivery tomorrow

Yeah it doesn't work on any other device I have tried in the past, but somehow on the 735, if you create a Course in Garmin Connect and send it to the 735XT (I used GC App from my phone to send it, don't know if that matters or not), you get turn by turn directions. The exact same process on the Fenix 3 just gives normal breadcrumb path and On and Off Course indication, but on the 735XT you get turn by turn directions.

One has to learn all life.... ;-)

I got it. Hah - didn't even know GC could do that :p I just added the widget. I might consider to import/redraw my favorite routes.
  • What widget did you add? No special widget required for this as far as I can tell.

In GC, there's a widget for Courses. I'm not talking about 735xt (!)
  • Just send any courses you have got stored on your Garmin Connect account to your 735 from the mobile app and should work.

Not sure if it also works if you send them from Garmin Express from a computer and a wired connection to your 735 of course. Sounds like it ought to as presume it does extra processing depending on the device you are wanting to send it to.

From what have found out this may also work with an Edge 25 - not the sort of device the "regulars" here tend to have though - me included.
  • So I went out at lunchtime and it sort of works. I get *most* turn notifications, but not all. I'm guessing it generates then based on if the track turns through approximately 90 degrees. I had one indication on a bend that was not a turn and I had a missed turn notification when on a map it looks straight on (but it's actually a right hand turn). It's quite easy to use the map for extra information so you can see which way you need to go if you don't get a notification.

    All in all, not bad.

  • KALAMARIOS - the process of creating a course in GC and a route in Strava is very similar.

As such when you are travelling you probably would be advised to use Strava to select a favoured route and just replicate it in GC.

I can now create courses in GC on my iPad and send to my 735 using that (or my mobile phone) which saves a lot of hassle when you are "out and about" and do not have a myriad of cables and sundry PC "tools" to use.

Thanks Tim! I will definitely give it a try although I would like to eliminate the step of replicating the route in GC. That said, Strava has yet to release a usable route-creating tool for iOS/finger-based browsers so I am definitely interested in making routes with GC from the get-go.

BTW, my 735XT+HRM delivery got pushed to this Monday the 23rd, barely missing my Saturday 14 miler :-)

So I did just that, meaning pretty much replicate the course from Strava, and the process was pretty quick. Now the big surprise was actually following the course on the 735xt. It was pretty amazing, I am very very impressed and I will be using this functionality in all my travels!

    Garmin well done!!!
  • Yeah, good isn't it. I setup a course for an "exploring" run the other day and some might be interested in this pic https://www.instagram.com/p/BF_gCGouofB/ which gives an idea of the sort of display you get.
