Turn by Turn Navigation

Anyone know if you can get turn by turn navigation like on the f3 from a TCX or GPX file?
  • Ooops, I just noticed I did not follow your exact process. I transferred the Course to the fenix 3 using USB from GC and not from the Mobile App. Will re-test again with your process.
  • This thread is very promising!

I will definitely test all of this on my 735xt (arrives on Tuesday the 24th) and report back but in the meantime, does anyone know how route exporting from Strava would work? I mainly use Strava to map out routes in unfamiliar cities because of of the amazing heatmap their routing tool uses (they have a ton of data in any city you can imagine). In the past, I exported the route as GPX and imported it on Movescount to download on my Ambit3. On Movescount I would then add a couple of waypoints to use for routing on the watch.

Is there a way to import the GPX (or TCX, Strava exports both) to GC so that I can add waypoints or the only way to bring the GPX/TCX on 735xt is through the /Newfiles directory? I would prefer to avoid this option when I travel because many times I don't have a laptop with me to mount the 735xt as a drive ...
  • Ok can 100% confirm 735XT has undocumented feature of turn by turn directions using just a course from GC. Fenix 3 tested side by side using same process does not.

I cannot see how you can edit the notifications in any way but it just works when you navigate a course.

Like this watch a lot already

Good to know does not only work for me then!

So how did you transfer the course to your units in the end?

What you could try is copying the course FIT file from the 735 onto your Fenix 3 - put into NEWFILES folder.
The fact that I could "see" the course points in GTC suggests that they are written into the FIT file and not auto magically created on the fly by the device each time you use that course.
  • KALAMARIOS - the process of creating a course in GC and a route in Strava is very similar.

As such when you are travelling you probably would be advised to use Strava to select a favoured route and just replicate it in GC.

I can now create courses in GC on my iPad and send to my 735 using that (or my mobile phone) which saves a lot of hassle when you are "out and about" and do not have a myriad of cables and sundry PC "tools" to use.
  • PS here is a screen shot from the FIT File Repair Tool of the course points in a course created in GC and copied off my 735.

Does not look like the author has implemented full editing of course points but you can change the marker symbol and delete course points.

In both cases I copied what you did and sent the course from Garmin Connect App to the watches. I used the same exact course in both cases. I could probably copy the FIT from the 735 to the f3 and I am guessing it would work, but I am wondering where the processing to create the waypoints is occurring. I don;t think it can be on the 735 as it doesn't have any maps loaded on to it, so must be in GC App and check which device. In thinking about this I am betting this is because of Varia Vision compatibility so you can see route directions on the VV.
  • Varies Vision compatibility makes sense. It's still pretty poor not supporting all the other watches which can handle coursepoints. Current ones at the very least.
  • ... turn by turn directions using just a course from GC...

Maybe a dump question  How on earth are you using GC to do that. I though GC (web) couldn't do that, which is why I always use RWGPS with cues...

PS - just ordered a 735XT - hope for delivery tomorrow
