My Garmin 645 is not showing my whole run on the map.

This problem only becomes evident after I've finished my run and I'm reviewing. I ran 11 miles yesterday, but after 4 miles, the device stopped showing my route. Why does this happen? How can I prevent it from happening again? I believe my device is up to date software wise. This is very frustrating as I got the device a month ago, and this is the second time where my device has stopped showing my run. It functions normally during my run, it only becomes clear there are problems after I've finished.

  • It happened to me today.  It has happened a few times, but always on longer runs.  Today I went 12 miles, but the map shows that I stopped at 6 miles.  Connect and Strava show splits, heart rate, elevation, and cadence for 12.1 miles.  I'm running trails in the woods, and there are no leaves on the trees yet, so the GPS shouldn't be having a problem.  It was overcast, and I think other times when it happened it may have been cloudy and/or raining.  Otherwise, I have no idea why this happens.

  • It happened to me twice this week, I ended up plugging into garmin express and updating and has been fine for the past few runs!

  • This same thing happened to me yesterday.  I ran a marathon and it shows the full distance but the map is crazy.  It shows me going over buildings, cutting across ponds and doesn't show entire sections of the course.  Frustrating.  I've looked at GPS maps of other people who did the race that day and they look perfect, so it's not like it was something with the satellites in the area, the course or surroundings.  How do I fix and prevent this from happening again?

  • I would start with backing up then removing all the activities from the watch's file system located in the folder \GARMIN\ACTIVITY using these directions - Removing Recorded Activities to Free Up Space

How do I fix and prevent this from happening again?

Not sure you can 100% prevent it, but you can minimize your chances of it happening again with a factory reset.

  • Okay, thanks.  I did the factor reset of the watch.  We'll see if that helps.  But I don't think I've ever connected this watch to my current MacBook.  In fact, I know I haven't.  I just sync it with the garmin correct app on my iPhone.  I might not have ever connected it to any computer, come to think of it.  Does that change things?
