My Garmin 645 is not showing my whole run on the map.

This problem only becomes evident after I've finished my run and I'm reviewing. I ran 11 miles yesterday, but after 4 miles, the device stopped showing my route. Why does this happen? How can I prevent it from happening again? I believe my device is up to date software wise. This is very frustrating as I got the device a month ago, and this is the second time where my device has stopped showing my run. It functions normally during my run, it only becomes clear there are problems after I've finished.

  • What about the other metrics? Is it showing that you ran 11 or did everything cut off after 4 miles? This has happened to me, but only after I inadvertently pressed the stop button when I thought I was pressing something else. Now I periodically check my watch to make sure the distance is advancing and also set the lock screen.

The other metrics are showing, cadence, pace, heart rate, just not the map. I exported the garmin data into Strava, and the map cuts off at 4 miles as well. I downloaded the gpx data from Strava, and the data points are all there from the whole run, so not sure why Garmin or Strava is showing the map after mile 4.

  • Would you mind providing a link to the Garmin activity?

  • Did it only happen once? It looks like your GPS lock was gone after 4 miles. When that happens the accelerometer in your watch will take over for calculating distance, but no more GPS data will be stored.

This is the second time this has happened. It's weird looking at the pace chart in Strava, and where it goes up and down a lot in the first 4 miles, it's much smoother in the last 7 miles. Same phenomenon occurred in my other run. Are you saying that the 645 would still be able to measure that i'm running based off the accelerometer? I'm still new to the 645. Also, I had a look at the GPX export file from Strava, and I looked at two data points, one before and one after the loss of GPS lock and I couldn't tell any difference between those two data points. At this point I just hope I can avoid this happening again, but would need to know what's going on at the least.

Btw this is the other run where this issue happened. This one conked out after 7 miles.

  • Yes, when the GPS is not used, the accelerometer is used. E.g., when I run on a treadmill, GPS is always off, but the watch still shows the distance I have run. This would also happen outside in long tunnels, where you could lose the GPS signal as well. I noticed you are running in New York. High buildings could also impact GPS lock.

Have you restarted your watch already? Or, maybe do a factory reset? If this problem occurs more often, I would contact Garmin support. Maybe there is a issue with your watch’s GPS sensor.

    • The same thing happened to me, ended up being sent a new watch and it kept on happening. Now it seems to be fixed - not sure what the issue was unfortunately, but I now use no 3rd party watch face or apps apart from STRYD data field. Used to annoy the hell out of me, but I only ever used it for cosmetic purposes as I get all my pace/distance data from stryd which I feel is far more reliable!

  • Hi! I had the same problem once - statistics from the run seemed OK, but the trace was truncated:

    I
t happened before Sensor Hub update to version 6.90.
