Device won't charge

Anyone had issues with their 645M not charging? My unit it brand new and the contacts are clean. When I plug it in nothing happens unless I apply pressure and hold quite firmly the ENTIRE time. If I let go the unit stops charging. We have a forerunner 235 at home and my cable works perfectly on that device. The connection on my watch seems loose. I also get this message after releasing the pressure: "Unsupported cable. use provided cable to sync while charging." I have reached out to tech support. I'm really happy with the watch itself, but am bummed that after dropping $450 the physical connection for charging is giving me a hard time.

Did u unplug from PC w/o ejecting device,  that will cause issue

  • I'm having this problem too.  I can get it to charge, but by only applying pressure.  I currently using a 'Torjan' clamp over my charging clamp to apply enough pressure to force it to charge.  I've tried all the suggestions above, but the clamp is the only one that seems to have worked for the time being.  Hopefully it will fix itself over time.

Thanks Finn.  Once I applied enough pressure, the watch started to change.

  • Well the issue is back for me.  Charging my watch has been harder and harder over the last few months. Now I can't get it to charge at all.  Once the battery runs out looks like I'm out of business.  That's too bad, I really like this watch.  Kind of hard to trust garmin products when the simplest part of the watch fails rendering it useless.  Ugh.

  • I've had my 645 Music for just about 2 years and it's been a great watch.  Then all of a sudden the other day it turns off and won't come on.  Tried everything suggested on Garmin, etc... but no avail.  I left it on the charger over the weekend and on Monday it at least turned on, but won't charge over 1%.  Two calls to Garmin and the best they can do is give me a refurbished watch for a decent price (but no guarantee that it will last more than 6+ months).  I'm not really a fan of refurbished tech.  What blows me away is that these watches are built to throw away after a few years, can't replace the batteries...what a waste!  And am I really expected to buy a new $400+ watch every 2-3 years?  I haven't abused mine, in fact I've taken great care of it.  I really like the 645M due to the music, size of watch and features.  Guess I'll have the watch the holiday sales and help Garmins stock price (which now I know why they've done so well if you have to replace the new tech every couple years).  My older Garmin that my son uses is at least 10 years old and still going fine.

  • I'm 100% with you on this.  My 645 continues to work for now, but charging is still VERY problematic.  I've actually resorted to putting a c-clamp on the charging pins that go around the watch.  That's the only way I've been able to apply a decent amount of pressure for a long enough time to charge the watch.  I've been doing this for about 4 months now.  I've taken good care of mine too.  I love this watch, but its hard to justify the cost if it only lasts a few years.  A watch should not be a disposable purchase.
