Activity memory almost full, upload to garmin connect

Got a message similar to the text above on my 645 after a run this evening. Bit strange as the watch is paired to my phone so activities get uploaded automatically as soon as I get back within range of it.

When I got home, I connected the watch to my PC to check the space and indeed the 19Mb of space available is almost full! Almost all the space was taken up by the GARMIN\Activity folder which was 17.1Mb and contains every activity (143) I've done since I got the unit on March 13th! I've just manually deleted all these files as they've all been uploaded to Connect already but surely this should have been handled automatically as it was on my previous 620?

I hope a previous activity normally is not a few weeks old?

Why not? There are several locations where I'll run a course and want to see if I can do better the next time around. Sometimes it can be 60-90 days before I revisit the course location. I have an activity saved on my 935 that I ran August 14th. I plan to race that activity again in a couple of weeks when I return to that location. I don't let more than 45 days go by before I manually delete activities. This way I don't have to worry about auto deletion of an activity I want to keep.

You are absolutely right. I never used race previous activity and assumed it was the last saved activity and did not think about racing against any activity in the past.
  • So I started getting this message about a week ago on my Garmin 645 (non-music model). I deleted all of the activities manually when the watch was plugged into my Mac, then when the message still kept appearing I deleted them via the watch interface. Yesterday I completed three separate activities and when I checked them before a sync, only the last one had been saved. I had saved them all, so can only assume they were overwritten. I reset the watch to factory settings and deleted all data, which meant I then had to set the phone up again. Today I completed one activity and got the warning message again. I've raised a support call....
  • PWD1977, did you empty the recycle bin

Yep, and also deleted all activities from the watch independently of deleting them via the mac.
  • PWD1977, how many free memory does the 645 have

is your watch up to date with latest firmware check your watch for any large files in the GARMIN root folder
or large files in the GARMIN/REMOTESW folder

Thank you. Yes, the watch is on FW v4.2. I reset the watch to factory settings yesterday and deleted all data. The size of the root file is 2.5MB. The remoteSW folder is 184KB. When I check on the Garmin Connect app it is showing over 2MB of available storage. There is virtually nothing on the watch after the factory reset yesterday. Although the watch is otherwise functioning ok, I don't want it to overwrite activities again the next time I complete more than one without syncing.
  • PWD1977, 2MB free is low

size of root folder or root file ?

please would you be so kind and check again with your apple instead of the Connect app :o check your watch for any large files in the GARMIN root folder
or large files in the GARMIN/REMOTESW folder

I meant the root folder. Using Finder on my iMac, the capacity of the overall disk volume is 20.7MB, of which 18.1MB are available.
  • PWD1977, thx... all well :)

    18MB sounds enough
mind you there is a limit on the amount of fit files for the activity folder
you can check that in the device.fit file on your 645

find out how many fit files your device can handle
upload the device.fit file here ">fit2tcx.runalyze">fit2tcx.runalyze and search for directory="Activity"

for a forerunner FR35 file max is 50

for a forerunner FR935 file max is 200

I will do this when I get home tonight. However, there is only 1 fit file on the device as I did a factory reset and data delete on Saturday. On my one activity since I have got the warning message.
  • Definitely sounds like something else is going on with your watch as opposed to the s/w not deleting old files like it's supposed to. I'm still cleaning up manually at the start of every month given there have been no firmware updates from Garmin for quite a while.
  • With the current situation, I'm not too worried about tracking activities so didn't do my normal cleanout at the start of every month. This is where the 645 is at currently. Will be interesting to see what happens after my run later on today.

  • Happy to report it's working a bit better, my activity was 339Kb & this is how it looked afterwards so it must have deleted some old activities to have saved it.
