Activity memory almost full, upload to garmin connect

Got a message similar to the text above on my 645 after a run this evening. Bit strange as the watch is paired to my phone so activities get uploaded automatically as soon as I get back within range of it.

When I got home, I connected the watch to my PC to check the space and indeed the 19Mb of space available is almost full! Almost all the space was taken up by the GARMIN\Activity folder which was 17.1Mb and contains every activity (143) I've done since I got the unit on March 13th! I've just manually deleted all these files as they've all been uploaded to Connect already but surely this should have been handled automatically as it was on my previous 620?

I have to periodically clear my activity folder my 235 and 935.
  • So things have taken a step backwards since the 620 as I never had to do it on that watch? This is something that should of course be done automatically along with uploaded crash data & error logs etc.

    I’ve never cleared my 935!

    Workout more! :D
  • 935 owner here: I got my watch one year ago, but it only has activities going back to February. The watch should be auto-deleting activities, and yep, pretty sure that it worked this way on older watches too.
  • I never had to clear my old 230 in the more than two years and more than 5000 kilometers done with it. I expect the same auto-clear functionality from the newest 645 (so far all the activities done with it fit into watch memory), so if the watch cannot auto-clear uploaded activities, sounds like a bug to me.
  • I've contacted Garmin support about this as would agree that it's a bug. It really appears that very little testing is done on these products prior to release given the variety of problems being reported here or perhaps us early-adopters are seen by Garmin as the test team :)
  • The message about low memory is normal and found on other models as well. This itself is not a bug. The watch does not (and in fact should not) automatically remove synced activities, unless there is a setting to do so. It should, though, remove oldest activities when memory gets full. You'd receive the low memory warning nonetheless (which is supposed to give you a hint that you'd start loosing your oldest activities soon). So the question is whether oldest activities are deleted automatically from your watch when it runs out of memory. The warning itself is not a bug.

ive just checked and my odometer says 257 Activities, 1900km, 144hrs.

Looking at activities, the earliest one that is in the 935 is from 7th March, but totals go back to beginning of the year so it seems they are auto clearing.

[Edit] whoops just realised this is on a 935 not a 645, but it does prove the current generation of devices should auto-clear

The other question is whether you are supposed to get that warning if you have, in fact, synced with Garmin Connect. I've never seen that message once, and my watch has been auto-deleting for about 8 months now. I'm guess the bug here is that the watch thinks activities have not been synced when they actually have.
