Activity memory almost full, upload to garmin connect

Got a message similar to the text above on my 645 after a run this evening. Bit strange as the watch is paired to my phone so activities get uploaded automatically as soon as I get back within range of it.

When I got home, I connected the watch to my PC to check the space and indeed the 19Mb of space available is almost full! Almost all the space was taken up by the GARMIN\Activity folder which was 17.1Mb and contains every activity (143) I've done since I got the unit on March 13th! I've just manually deleted all these files as they've all been uploaded to Connect already but surely this should have been handled automatically as it was on my previous 620?
  • Is everyone seeing this message using an "M" model? I've had my non-M since the mid-March and have yet to see it despite running 6 times/week, yoga after most runs, and bike commuting most days for the last 2 weeks.

Mine is an M. I run 5-6 days a week. Probably averaging 6 running activities a week since March 20th when I got my watch. I also have a Stryd which I've used on 28 runs so far which will eat into the activity storage a bit faster.
  • On my FR735XT it took about 9 months of training 10 hours weekly to display the message. I guess it could appear sooner if I had other things in the watch's memory like courses and so on.

Had a look as I took a screenshot at the time, there were 143 fit files in the activity folder before I cleared it out taking up 17.3Mb of space. Guess someone is going to need to test what happens if you ignore the warning message, I can guess myself! Here's a thought maybe Garmin could test it :)
  • why are we seeing an error message?

This is not an error message. It's simply a notification that you're running low on memory and should expect oldest activities to disappear soon.

  • The facts of this again:

    - Every single activity on the watch had already been uploaded to GC mostly via BT on my phone but a few via the PC connection.
    - The drive was 100% full when I checked so indeed this certainly is low on memory!

A message saying to upload to GC even though this was already done sounds like a bug to me?
  • Ok, I see your point now. I was somehow confused by behaviour of other models. As it appears different models behave differently, or maybe this is indeed an issue with the 645 (or your device in particular).
  • Not just my device, see post #19 above. It's not that big a deal normally but just imagine it happened when you were running some goal race, would be a bit of a disappointment to potentially lose the activity. Still waiting to get any information from Garmin apart from them saying it 'should work'.
  • Got an email from Garmin Support today giving me the steps to manually delete the files in the Activities folder! Guess they don't even read the request as I'd already stated that I'd emptied it :(

So far these are the two responses I've got:

    1) It will delete the files itself
    2) Here's how to manually delete the files

  • Just got this message, even though I always upload almost immediately, Apparently the watch doesn't automatically delete old activity files?
  • I'd given up on this 'til I saw someone else post as my last answer from Garmin support was an offer to replace the watch! How that would solve anything I've no idea given several other people have reported seeing the same thing.
