Wifi

I wonder if anyone else has tried to use the wifi on the 645.The connection seems poor compared to any other wifi device I have and only seems to work near the router after a couple of goes. Also auto upload is enabled in the watch but I have to reconnect to the wifi to get an activity to upload each time.Interestingly in the settings on the garmin connect app auto upload is shown but is greyed out so I am not able to switch it on.Not a major issue in the grand scheme of things and everything else is working great but I would like to upload my workouts over wifi and also if we do get deezer this will need a decent wifi connection.
  • I just received the following response from Garmin on my support ticket. I probably won't have time to try this until the weekend but sharing so others can try if they decide.

In case there is any type of file corruption on the Forerunner 645 Music, I would like to attempt the following steps with the Forerunner connected to your computer. Please be sure to follow these steps AFTER you sync your device with Garmin Connect to ensure no activity data is lost:

    Windows:
    1. Press the Windows and E keys on your keyboard
    2. Open the Forerunner drive
    3. Open the Garmin folder
    4. Right click and Delete the Activity, Apps, Newfiles and WiFi folders
    5. Empty the Recycle Bin
    6. Safely eject your device from your computer
    Mac:
    1. Open the Finder
    2. Open the Garmin drive under Devices
    3. Open the Garmin folder
    4. Drag the Activity, Apps, Newfiles and WiFi folders to the Trashcan
    5. Empty the Trashcan
    6. Safely eject your device from your computer

Please unplug the device from the computer, turn it off and plug the device back in. Remove the Forerunner from Garmin Express (Home screen of Express > Forerunner 645 Music > Tools & Content > Remove Device) and then add it back. During the set up, attempt to add your home WiFi network again and test. To rule out any type of signal interference, turn the Bluetooth off on your phone to make sure the wireless syncing is only working via WiFi.

If the issue persists, I would recommend attempting to set the device up with another WiFi network. If the device is able to sync without issue via another WiFi network, we can pinpoint where the issue is.

    thanks

  • I was able to connect to the guest WiFi at work successfully today. What gear and security protocols they're using I'm not sure though.
  • Could it be that based on the number of wifi devices connected, the router was having trouble? I ran into that with an older router a few months back, where various devices would have random issues connecting over wifi. My router was rated to handle something like 8 devices, and I was using something like up to 12 at one time..

I am still battling with the wifi.I can delete the network, add it back in and it connects fine.It will then intermittantly find the network and transfer but this happens about half the time.It does not seem to be affected by how many devices are connected to the network.I have not had chance to test it on another wifi network.I am going to retry autoupload after a run tonight.I have checked all the requirements and they seem to be fine.I am thinking of trying the advice garmin gave the salamander above but am slightly anxious this will cause problems to the watch ie deleting files off it.It seems odd to me that it works half the time but not the rest.
  • I too get the error message "Network error. Try again later". I have set up wifi on the watch and also tried via Garmin express. When setting up on the watch it finds the network and says connection successful after I add the password. On one occasion it started transferring but just kept spinning for ever and I had to cancel it. Most times I just get the error message.

I have tried with Bluetooth off on the phone. I have also tried after a reset for another issue. My router is ac but it also does b/n/g. Its on channel 10 and on WPA2. Model is DSL-AC68U.

I shall await any response by TheSalamander on the trouble-shooting steps given by Garmin support.

Well I tried the steps Garmin suggested to TheSalamander.Initially no joy but now seems to connect to wifi and upload.I did find that my bluetooth connection was then lost and had a bit of a battle to reconnect(I had to delete the watch from garmin connect, uninstall garmin connect, reinstall garmin connect, reinstall the watch via bluetooth and this seemed to work).I now hopefully have both wifi and bluetooth stable.I am not however holding my breath.I did a dummy activity this am and it uploaded over wifi. Will try a proper activity later to see if wifi still stable and working.I did loose my apps installed from connect IQ in the process so had to reinstall but I did not loose any data.
Apart from these connection issues the watch has behaved very well(GPS,heart rate fairly accurate, elevation not so) and I am really liking runnning with it but also wearing it for everyday, work etc
  • Just a follow up from me. While I've not had a chance to follow the latest instructions from Garmin in post #22 my Wi-Fi connection seems much improved over the last couple of days and I am seeing activities auto-sync and also connect to network work. I have still received the connection error a few times, but overall connectivity has improved from 1% of the time working to 80%+.

Unfortunately I don't know what has caused the improvement as I still received errors after I did a hard reset of my watch - and I don't want to do a reset again as it is a pain configuring all my data fields etc. Will see how things go between now and the weekend and then determine whether to follow the #22 instructions.

    thanks

  • Although it seemed like my watch connected to my selected WiFi networks properly I wasn't sure whether or not they were actively connected and working. And since I also read recently, either in this thread or somewhere else, that Garmin prioritizes BT over WiFi. So to test WiFi usage this morning I closed the Garmin mobile app on my phone and went to the fitness center where I live and did a ~35 min spin bike session and saved it.

The workout did not transfer to my phone, which I had with me, and shortly after getting back to my house the watch had connected to my home network, transferred the workout, and sent an alert to the watch.

It's supposed to be decent weather here todays so maybe I'll record an outdoor walk at lunch time with GCM turned off to check that my office network connection is also working as expected.
  • R_Tellis, I've done some similar testing by just turning off BT on the phone, and it works fine (things upload as soon as I'm in wifi range, but I think the Music needs to be off)

I have made sure that phone bluetooth is off, garmin connect mobile app closed, watch bluetooth disabled and I still have problems using wifi.It will sometimes connect and transfer workout fine, sometimes will connect but just get stuck transferring and sometimes not connect at all.Last night I had a message saying battery level too low for wifi(battery was at 31%)
It does seem to be better at connecting since deleting the files and resynching to network as suggested above but this is not consistant.
I will try again tonight and I am in touch with garmin support so will post if they suggest anything different.
I have music switched off as well.
