Wifi

I wonder if anyone else has tried to use the wifi on the 645.The connection seems poor compared to any other wifi device I have and only seems to work near the router after a couple of goes.Also auto upload is enabled in the watch but I have to reconnect to the wifi to get an activity to upload each time.Interestingly in the settings on the garmin connect app auto upload is shown but is greyed out so I am not able to switch it on.Not a major issue in the grand scheme of things and everything else is working great but I would like to upload my workouts over wifi and also if we do get deezer this will need a decent wifi connection.
  • I'll contact Garmin however from doing some testing at home.

    Watch: Garmin FR645M firmware 2.40
    Routers: 3xNetgear R7000 running DD-WRT v3.0-r33675M kongac
    SSID: Routers share same SSID but broadcast on different channels

    1. Testing Network Connection via Garmin iOS: Connection Successful
    2. Adding a new Network via Garmin iOS: Successful
    3. Adding a new Network via Watch: Successful
    4. Manually connect to a Network that is already set up using "Connect to Wi-Fi" in watch settings: FAIL.. Sits on "Searching for Wi-Fi network" for ~2 minutes before displaying "Network error. Try again later". This happens 100% of the time from what I can tell.

    I have tried both DHCP and a fixed IP Address. Neither changes the above.

    I'm not sure how the watch is meant to handle WiFi vs Bluetooth. Can the watch only connect to one or other, does one have priority over the other, etc? Does anyone know?

    The issue seems to be similar to what others had previous reported with Fenix 5X on this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5x/156362-wifi-connection-problem where the last post on the thread suggests improvements in connectivity following a firmware update.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Alex

    I have exactly the same problem. If I go in and type the password in everything is aok, any other time it fails.
  • Wifi works good for me. I had problems initially because I didn't setup wifi via:
    Hold UP > settings > Wi-Fi > My Networks > Add Network. After adding my network one time, I go back to "Wi-Fi" and connect to Wi-Fi.
  • I've tried a number of solutions, including the suggestions in post #28/29 of this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into.../157063-/page2 which suggests a complete de-registration and reset. Unfortunately it still does not work correctly. If I test the connection it works, if I update the password it works... If I just select 'Connect to Network' it errors.

    Any help from Garmin would be appreciated as appears to be more than me having this issue.
  • As some additional input. I had an old Netgear WNDR3700 v1 sitting gathering dust. I removed DD-WRT and reinstalled the latest Netgear firmware (WNDR3700-V1.0.16.98NA). While I haven't completed exhaustive tests the Garmin watch does seem to connect via WiFi without the issues I was finding with my R7000/DD-WRT setup.

    To be clear though, this doesn't mean that the issue is with my R7000/DD-WRT setup since all my other wifi devices connect fine to it. I would assume there is something in the Garmin WiFi code that is causing an issue.

    I will raise a support ticket to Garmin in the hope that they will reach out to me and help resolve the root cause. My email has gone unanswered.

  • I'm having no problems with an Apple Airport using WPA2. On initial setup it didn't find the network but after manually setting it up the watch connects every time.
  • Garmin support responded so I'm doing some additional testing on my original router setup. They mentioned the following:

    Please be sure the network meets the requirements:
    • 2.4 GHz band
    • 802.11 B, N or G (AC is not supported, nor is 802.1x)
    • WEP / WPA / WPA2 security (WPA-Enterprise is not supported)
    • Channels 1-11 for North American devices, channels 1-13 for International devices
    I meet those criteria other than my routers are 802.11 AC, but are backwards compatible with B/G/N. I have changed my routers to just be G/N and rebooted the main router. I will monitor over the weekend. The exercise I just completed synched via Wi-Fi which is promising but could just be coincidence, will see how things go today/tomorrow.

  • Hi All
    I am still having issues with intermittant wifi connections.
    I am using 645M firmware 2.40
    My router is DLink DSL 3780 running at 2.4GHz on 802.11N on channel 7 using WPA2 so it seems to have fulfilled all the criteria that Garmin suggested to Alex.The watch finds and registers on the network no problem.However it only intermittantly connects.About 50% of the time I get "Network Connection Error Try later" and the rest of the time it transfers data.However it has at times started to transfer data but then not completed the transfer and I just get "Transfer Already in progress" message for a prolonged period of time.I will email garmin with this but I do think there is a problem with the watch in this regard.
  • The following is the response I sent to Garmin with regards the support ticket I have raised. I'm not sure what specifically has improved but for the last 4 days I have had about 99% Wi-Fi connection fails after successfully setting up the Wi-Fi on the watch. Today I am having about 70%+ success at connecting and transferring. As part of creating the below email I deleted and recreated the network setup (but I had also done that during the last 3 days as well), I also rebooted my main router and set all 3 house routers to have "Wireless Network Mode" as "NG-Mixed" rather than mixed. I wouldn't expect that to have made a difference but something has improved today.

    Hi,

    I've tried three different methods of setting up the WiFi and each way is initially successful.

    a) via Garmin Express 6.1.1.0
    • Connect watch via USB cable
    • Select watch in Garmin Express
    • Select Utilities->Wi-Fi Networks->Find Networks
    • Select "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Enter SSID password
    • Garmin Express shows as network set-up
    • Sync watch via Garmin Express
    • Disconnect Watch from Garmin Express
    • Select Settings->Wi-Fi->Connect to Wi-Fi
    • Watch displays "Searching for Wi-Fi network"; then "Transferring" i.e. success

    b) via Garmin Connect on iPhone
    • Select Settings->Garmin Devices->FR645M->General->Wi-Fi Networks
    • Select "Add a Network"
    • Select "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Enter SSID password
    • Select Connect to "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Message displayed "Successfully Connected to "ZenZooChu-2.4G""
    • Select sync on iPhone to ensure settings synced
    c) Directly via watch
    • Settings->Wi-Fi->My Networks->Add Network
    • Select "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Enter SSID password
    • Watch displays: "Connecting to ZenZooChu-2.4G"; "Connection Successful"

    However once the network is correctly set up, if I go to the watch and select Settings->Wi-Fi->Connect to Wi-Fi then the watch displays: "Searching for Wi-Fi network"; "Network error. Try again later". This happens between 50-99% of the time, the other times it is successful and I get the "Transferring/Transferring Complete" message. These two different results can happen with me sitting in the same place less than 3 feet from a router.

    However if on Garmin Connect iOS I go to Settings->Garmin Devices->FR645M->General->Wi-Fi Networks->ZenZooChu-2.4G->Test Network Connection then the test is always successful even if I have just received an error when having previously tried "Connect to Wi-Fi" from watch.

    My routers are 3 x Netgear R7000 with DD-WRT v3.0-r33675M
    While the routers are 802.11AC they are backwards compatible from B/G/N. However I have also now adjusted the router settings to use G/N in the 2.4G band.
    My SSID is ZenZooChu-2.4G
    My SSID password is alphanumeric with no special characters.
    I am using WPA2 security
    My routers use channel 1-11
    This is a home Wi-Fi network.

    Any help on how to further test would be welcome.

    Note on the thread: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-645-645m/1318547-wifi that there are others experiencing the same issue

    thanks

    Alex

    Will see what they come back with.

  • I now seem to have a more stable wifi connection not sure why though.I can sync and transfer data most but not every time.However the auto upload does not work.After every activity I have to connect again to the wifi network to sync.I have tried deleting the setting,power cycling then retrying to no avail.
  • Not sure if it is something I've changed (as per prior posts) that has made things improve, but finding so far the Wi-Fi is working better during the last 24 hours. My activities have automatically uploaded via Wi-Fi whether it is a gym workout in the house, or a run outside.
