Wifi

I wonder if anyone else has tried to use the wifi on the 645.The connection seems poor compared to any other wifi device I have and only seems to work near the router after a couple of goes. Also auto upload is enabled in the watch but I have to reconnect to the wifi to get an activity to upload each time.Interestingly in the settings on the garmin connect app auto upload is shown but is greyed out so I am not able to switch it on.Not a major issue in the grand scheme of things and everything else is working great but I would like to upload my workouts over wifi and also if we do get deezer this will need a decent wifi connection.
  • Never tried auto upload but my WiFi connection seems to be good.
This feature is so nice. No more pairing with phones/tablets, love it.
  • My watch arrived yesterday and I've had issues connecting with WiFi. It may just be used error so will try to play with it a bit more today/tomorrow. When I test the WiFi connection on the watch via the phone it works fine. When I just select to connect to WiFi via the watch directly it fails to connect.

Same issue.. need to type in password on watch to get it to upload
  • Have you made the initial setup in Garmin connect Devices -> General -> WiFi Networks?
I just had to enter the password once in Garmin connect and never again.
There was no need to to do any changes in my router.

As a follow up. I deleted the wifi network from the watch, and reentered it via the watch rather than the phone. From an initial quick test it now seems to work and my activity was uploaded to Garmin Connect servers via wifi.
  • Further to my above post, I just returned home, completed a run, and then went to see if the WiFi connection worked to upload my activity and unfortunately it didn't upload, and manually trying to connect to WiFi resulted in an error being displayed on the watch. So would seem that maybe there are some bugs in the WiFi function?
  • I am still having problems with wifi/auto upload.I connected to wifi via watch rather than connect app but this did not make much difference.I have to be right next to the router for any chance of a connection(my router may not be the best but no other device needs this) and I have just tried to auto upload after a run but the display just read transfer in progress for 20 mins until I restarted the watch.Any thoughts from Garmin on this?

Not sure what would be causing the issues with Wifi. The device I have works as expected. This is something that we would want to look at further. We would encourage those experiencing an issue to contact our Support Team. There is some specific troubleshooting and information that they can collect that will allow us to investigate this further. You can send an email, chat, or call the a team in your local area.
  • I'll contact Garmin however from doing some testing at home.

    Watch: Garmin FR645M firmware 2.40
    Routers: 3xNetgear R7000 running DD-WRT v3.0-r33675M kongac
SSID: Routers share same SSID but broadcast on different channels

    1. Testing Network Connection via Garmin iOS: Connection Successful
    2. Adding a new Network via Garmin iOS: Successful
    3. Adding a new Network via Watch: Successful
    4. Manually connect to a Network that is already set up using "Connect to Wi-Fi" in watch settings: FAIL.. Sits on "Searching for Wi-Fi network" for ~2 minutes before displaying "Network error. Try again later". This happens 100% of the time from what I can tell.

I have tried both DHCP and a fixed IP Address. Neither changes the above.

I'm not sure how the watch is meant to handle WiFi vs Bluetooth. Can the watch only connect to one or other, does one have priority over the other, etc? Does anyone know?

The issue seems to be similar to what others had previous reported with Fenix 5X on this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5x/156362-wifi-connection-problem where the last post on the thread suggests improvements in connectivity following a firmware update.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Alex

I used this method and it has been working fine for last 2 days.. (using 2 different wifi networks)
