Wifi

I wonder if anyone else has tried to use the wifi on the 645.The connection seems poor compared to any other wifi device I have and only seems to work near the router after a couple of goes. Also auto upload is enabled in the watch but I have to reconnect to the wifi to get an activity to upload each time.Interestingly in the settings on the garmin connect app auto upload is shown but is greyed out so I am not able to switch it on.Not a major issue in the grand scheme of things and everything else is working great but I would like to upload my workouts over wifi and also if we do get deezer this will need a decent wifi connection.
  • When you hold down the light button, you get to the controls menu, and that you can configure in settings and add/remove things you want. The "sync" there can also sync with BT, but you can actually add a specific wifi option. That's how I do manual wifi - controls and select the wifi option. And for me, that works consistently without an error if I'm in wifi range. "Controls" is on other watches like the f5 family and va3 too.

    Hi All
I have tried accessing wifi both via controls and from specific wifi setting and the problem of intermittent connection is the same.If I delete the wifi network and reinstall it syncs first time ok but subsequent attempts fail.I am going to just use bluetooth or via PC for moment but I hope garmin sort this soon.

  • I've noticed that the auto upload through wifi stopped working after the update to 2.50. I wasn't having issues prior to the update. If I go to garmin connect through the IOS app and connect to the wifi network through the device setting I get an error after hitting test connection. I can go on the watch, long press the light button, and connect to wifi from there. Any thoughts?

That sounds just like what was happening for me, it would connect after the initial setup but never again. Is your network "hidden"?
  • Model: FR 645 Music
    Firmware: 2.4
Wifi AP: Asus RT-AC87U, 2.4GHz, non hidden SSID
(edit) - No BT headphones nor music activity happening.

I've got an issue/possible bug or error handling related to wifi. Will send an email to support separately.

I do not have problems configuring the wifi or getting it connected for syncs (so long I remain in range). I do however have some issues with the distance required to actually get connected. It's awfully short, est less than 12 meters (!?). I was previously using the FR 630 and could easily start my sync while I'm still outdoors cooling down after a run in front of my house but now i can't even do this indoors unless i'm in the same room as my access point. This is still manageable while waiting for a stable update to the firmware, but...

If I do get connected, and it starts transmitting the data across and I accidentally move out of range while this is happening, I will be stuck with the 'Transferring' status, and get into a battery drain mode. I've forced a shutdown, which then prevents me from powering up the FR645 again, at least until a good 20m-30m later, with a significant drop in remaining battery life.

This whole process and error can be reproduced quite easily.

Just a word of caution to those who start their sync over wifi but move around in and out of (a very short) range. Really looking forward to some improvements in this area..

    Hi Pizzapotamus
My network is not hidden and is broadcasting its SSID.I have given up on wifi for moment as attempts to use it seemed to mess up the bluetooth. Now with no wifi the bluetooth is behaving well.Hopefully this will be fixed soon as I notice iheart radio is now available in the USA and hopefully Deezer will follow in Europe.

  • I have experienced a similar/same issue as Derrick-Ng where my watch got stuck in a transferring status. On powering down my watch it would not power back up for 10-20 minutes. I had posted a thread https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-645-645m/1322446-645m-just-died-i-think

I can confirm, Ive got the same issues here... and like TheSalamander , can confirm that it can lead to complete battery drain...
    (as I posted here : https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/running/forerunner-645-645m/1328635-bug-increased-battery-usage-after-activity)

Ive got two completely different wifi networks in my house, they use completely different routers (brand/model) , and even different internet backends.
and both have exactly the same issue...
note: I have tvs, laptops, phones all connecting to both networks without issues, just this 645M
ive deleted the wifi profiles etc, multiple times, no change

if you do a manual sync, far too frequently, you will see it get stuck on 'searching networks', or 'connecting' or transferring ... sometimes it will fail properly, often times it get seems to get stuck, and whilst the watch still works, if you back out of the sync, it will permanently stick on 'transfer in progress'... and you can see the battery continually draining.

(just doing syncs, you can see wifi activity generally drains the battery quickly)

so whats happened in the cases Ive reported is:
ive how GC app closed when ive ended an activity, but auto upload on wifi on... so its obviously ive got stuck transferring, or is continually retrying and killing the battery.

(this can also be verified, as in these cases, the activity has not ended up on GC until the battery died, and i booted the watch after recharging it)

(Ive also a suspicion even if the auto uploads works its still draining the battery after auto upload, perhaps attempting more syncs, or keeping the wifi radio on?)

    note:Im on OS 2.5

I guess for now, Im going to turn off auto-upload and use GC app
but really Garmin need to sort out the underlying wifi issue , otherwise things like music transfer after going to be really tedious.
  • having the same issues with wifi since yesterday. Transfer failed. My old fr620 worked perfect on wifi, so it is an fr645 issue. i am always using the sync from the menu. Automatic upload never worked. Software version 2.5. Don't know how it worked with 2.4

    b) via Garmin Connect on iPhone
    • Select Settings->Garmin Devices->FR645M->General->Wi-Fi Networks
    • Select "Add a Network"
    • Select "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Enter SSID password
    • Select Connect to "ZenZooChu-2.4G"
    • Message displayed "Successfully Connected to "ZenZooChu-2.4G""
    • Select sync on iPhone to ensure settings synced

This did the trick. Syncing on my watch is working again
