My question is, WHERE do you do this? I can't find anything on the app, the computer application or on the watch itself. Nothing to set intervals, nothing for programs. Anyone know?

My question is, WHERE do you do this? I can't find anything on the app, the computer application or on the watch itself.

On the FR235, from the watch face, press …

I don't understand why there would be any confusion. After all, you have chosen to post your question in the Forerunner‑235 section of the forum, so “the watch” must refer to the FR235, right?

Yes, I am. Because that's the only menu I have,
That's the only menu you have in Garmin Connect online, but previously you mentioned “the app” (which is Garmin Connect Mobile), “the computer application” (which is Garmin Express), and “the watch” (which is a Forerunner‑235). Those are four different things, all in all, even though they are all components of an integrated fitness tracking platform. The Garmin Connect Mobile app has a different menu, and the watch's firmware has a menu tree of its own.

All I am hoping to do is find the instructions I mention above.
Those are instructions for operating the watch in the FR230/235 Owner's Manual, not instructions for Garmin Connect online.

I guess I'm just not cut out to use one of these things, though they are touted as easy:
Where were they “touted as easy”? Was that somewhere on Garmin's or the retailers' marketing/advertising collateral?

when what you see is not what is represented in any way in the instructions,
Actually, in this instance the instructions you quoted are correct. (Garmin's Owner's Manuals are sometimes wrong, I'll gladly agree with that much.)

and there is no customer support,
You can call or email Product Support. I cannot vouch for how good they are or how quickly they respond, though.

It's frustrating when directions bear no resemblance to the actual item. And I still don't know why I can't see what you see.
It helps to look in the right place. Even if it means you need to toss out some of your preconceptions and start from a different point of view that what you thought was ‘obvious’.

I understand you're frustrated, but it's also frustrating to me when I've tried to walk you through from the basic starting point, and you somehow tried to carry on from a different place.

Max556 Thank you so much, ASmugDill, not so much

Max556 I appreciate your clarification. It was the winner!
ASmugDill, I am surprised you would take the time to point out how stupid you think I am. Don't you have a life?
  • ASmugDill, I am surprised you would take the time to point out how stupid you think I am.
Au contraire, I think you're awfully creative to find a different interpretation of both the instructions offered in the Owner's Manual published by Garmin and the press-by-button-press instructions I gave you.
  • Confusion...

The whole thread is actually quite funny to read and could be used as a textbook example on communication 101... This said, it does show how confusing the Garmin Connect/Express/Connect Mobile/watch software 'platform' can be. You can create/edit/review custom workouts on Connect desktop, view them but not create/edit them on Connect Mobile, view them but not create/edit them on the watch... And then there is your personal info (date of birth, height, etc) that can be changed in many places but gets overriden, and your preferences (12/24h clock, etc) that also can be set in different places of different menus in different apps, and again happily get overwritten...

I personally swim in this stuff without too much difficulty, but I also act as the Technical Support Department for my wife: I decided to forego explaining about the existence of Connect Mobile, I got 12/24h and km vs miles to finally stick in one place, and she uses Connect desktop as a post-race viewer; I'm happy she does not use custom training programs, and I got her to know how to create/change simple intervals on the watch; but even then, the menus (in French) are not even the same between the FR230 and 235... "Fractionnés" on the 235, "Intervalles" on the 230, same firmware rev... I'm sure her HR zones are all screwed up on the watch, it took me god knows how many times to finally get mine to be ok and not change anymore. No wonder users get lost.
  • The Connect platform can be a bit of a jungle for new users. Regarding the French translation, suggest that you report that back to Garmin. Strange that it is different, considering that both watches are from the 23x platform.

    Thanks

    Chris
  • But one thing you can do to make things a little less clunky is to set all that you want to set (and can set) in Garmin Connect on the interweb and then sync them to your device. It's far easier to work from there than to try to do the same thing on different platforms. Besides, having the setting on the interweb makes it easier to reload settings if you have to reset the device for whatever reason.
